Position Overview

This is a temporary role designed to fill a gap in the current staffing schedule; the successful candidate will serve as a Consultant in the General Surgery division. The position entails 10 Programmed Activities weekly and includes participation in a predictable on-call rota.

Key Responsibilities

  • In-patient Care: The appointee, supported by junior medical staff, will oversee the daily management of hospitalized patients.
  • Out-patient Services: The appointee will assist senior consultants in managing out-patient services, including urgent care clinics, and will be expected to conduct independent clinics as necessary.
  • Surgical Procedures: The appointee will collaborate with consultants in performing surgical operations and procedures in the operating theatre, and will also be required to manage independent surgical lists as needed.
  • Educational Contributions: The appointee is expected to engage in the education of junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals.
  • Administrative Responsibilities: The appointee will undertake administrative tasks related to patient management and the oversight of junior staff, along with other duties as assigned.
  • Adaptability: A level of flexibility in working hours is anticipated to accommodate the evolving demands of the department.
  • Cover for Colleagues: The appointee will provide cover for colleagues during annual leave and study leave.

Job Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has emerged due to the expansion of the General Surgery Department at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. This expansion is part of a significant investment in the clinical workforce across General Surgery and its sub-specialties.

The role is a fixed-term contract for a Consultant in General Surgery. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of activities, including:

  • Outpatient Services
  • Elective Main Theatre and CEPOD Lists
  • Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
  • Virtual Consultations
  • Routine Ward Rounds

As a member of the Trust, you will collaborate closely with clinical, medical, and managerial colleagues to deliver high-quality healthcare to our patients. Integral to these responsibilities are the following:

  • Delivering exceptional clinical services
  • Supporting and enhancing educational initiatives
  • Conducting all activities in accordance with the Trust's policies and operational guidelines
  • Performing clinical duties in line with contractual obligations and the Trust's service plans

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Basic medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Advanced Life Support/Advanced Trauma Life Support certification

Professional Registration

  • Full GMC Registration and licensable status

Training and Clinical Experience

  • Completion of at least 4 years of full-time postgraduate training (or pro-rata for part-time) with a minimum of two years in a specialty training or fixed-term program in General Surgery, or equivalent experience and competencies.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in General Surgery at a Middle Grade level.
  • Previous experience within the NHS.

Management and Administrative Skills

  • Competence in organizing and supervising junior staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload efficiently.

Clinical Effectiveness

  • Proficiency in utilizing evidence-based practices and clinical audits to inform decision-making.

Desirable Attributes

  • Previous experience in clinical audits.
  • Research experience is advantageous.
