Lead Professional for Looked After Children in CAMHS - Band 7
This role presents a unique opportunity to become a pivotal member of a progressive team dedicated to enhancing the mental health and wellbeing of looked after children. The successful candidate will collaborate with CAMHS and various targeted services to address the complex needs of this vulnerable population, ensuring they are equipped for a healthy transition into adulthood.
The individual in this position will uphold the highest clinical standards within the triage and pathway operations of the community CAMHS service, working in synergy with other healthcare professionals within a multi-disciplinary framework, adhering to the I-Thrive model of care.
The ideal candidate will be a registered professional (nurse, social worker, or allied health professional) with a solid background in working with children in care. Responsibilities will include conducting assessments and providing brief interventions for looked after children within the CAMHS triage setting, collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team and various partner agencies.
Key responsibilities will encompass the delivery of the LAC care pathway and prioritizing assessments for looked after children in conjunction with the LAC team.
The successful candidate will also be expected to mentor final-year students during their placements within the service.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage daily workload effectively, ensuring that referrals for children in care are prioritized appropriately, while liaising with the LAC nursing team and pediatricians to facilitate effective communication and collaboration in the best interests of the child.
- Provide clinical advice and support to the team regarding the treatment of children in care.
- Conduct thorough assessments of children in care and their support networks to identify and address their mental health and wellbeing needs through both remote and in-person consultations.
- Offer brief interventions and guidance to children and their support networks as necessary.

Probationary Period - This position is subject to a probationary period. Internal candidates may be exempt unless they are currently undergoing a probationary period or are bank staff.
High Cost Area Supplement - London - This role includes a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary, with a minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum of £5,436 per annum.
Job Responsibilities
- Support the development of a cohesive team alongside the LAC team, fostering productive relationships throughout the Trust and with local authority social care teams.
- Promote integrated health and social care collaboration internally and externally to effectively manage the needs of children in care.
- Encourage the sharing of clinical knowledge across children's services and with local authority teams.
- Participate in staff appraisals and supervision as appropriate.
- Act as a deputy for pathway leads when necessary.
- Supervise students on placements, ensuring they receive appropriate support and experience in health services related to children in care.
- Attend LAC/CAMHS meetings bi-weekly to ensure effective communication and collaboration for the benefit of children in care.
- Lead educational initiatives to raise awareness of developments in LAC mental health alongside the wider LAC team.
Clinical Skills
- Function as an autonomous, registered practitioner, accountable for actions guided by professional codes of conduct and Trust protocols.
- Enhance professional knowledge through accredited courses, workshops, and in-house training.
- Ensure the highest standards of care for children in care and their families.
- Initiate referrals to specialist services and monitor progress, seeking additional support as needed.
- Provide information and education to children in care and their support networks, promoting dignity and quality of life.
- Maintain evidence-based practice supported by research and national guidelines.
- Offer clinical and professional guidance to junior team members regarding treatment and management of children in care.
- Demonstrate legal literacy and support children and young people in decision-making processes.
- Maintain expert clinical assessment practices and knowledge of treatment for children referred to CAMHS.
- Promote care practices that minimize the likelihood of hospital admissions for children whose needs can be met in the community.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and partner agencies to ensure effective communication and support.
- Participate in child protection and clinical supervision in accordance with Trust policy.
- Understand the evolving risks faced by vulnerable children and promote a trauma-informed culture.
