Position Overview

Lead Professional for Looked After Children in CAMHS - Band 7

This role presents a unique opportunity to become a key member of a vibrant team dedicated to enhancing the lives of looked after children. The successful candidate will collaborate with CAMHS and targeted services to address the complex needs of this vulnerable population, ensuring they transition into adulthood with resilience and well-being.

The individual in this position will uphold the highest clinical standards within the triage and pathway functions of the community CAMHS service, working in synergy with other healthcare professionals in a multi-disciplinary team, adhering to the I-Thrive framework to provide comprehensive care and support.

The ideal candidate will be a registered professional (nurse, social worker, or allied health professional) with substantial experience in working with children in care. Responsibilities will include conducting assessments and brief interventions for looked after children within the CAMHS triage framework, collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team and various agency partners.

The post holder will ensure the effective delivery of the LAC care pathway, prioritizing assessments for looked after children in conjunction with the LAC team.

Additionally, the post holder will be responsible for supervising final-year students during their placements within the service.

Main Responsibilities

  • Manage daily workload effectively, ensuring that referrals for children in care are prioritized appropriately. Collaborate with the LAC nursing team and pediatricians to facilitate effective communication in the best interests of the child.
  • Provide clinical advice and support to the team regarding the treatment of children in care.
  • Conduct assessments of children in care and their support networks to identify and address their mental health and well-being needs. Assessments will be conducted through both telephone and face-to-face consultations, as well as participation in professional meetings when necessary.
  • Offer brief interventions, advice, and guidance to children and their support networks as needed.

High Cost Area Supplement

This role includes a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary, with minimum and maximum payments specified.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support the development of an effective team alongside the LAC team, fostering productive relationships throughout the Trust and with local authority social care teams.
  • Promote integrated health and social care collaboration both internally and externally to enhance the management of children in care.
  • Encourage the sharing of clinical knowledge across children's services and local authority teams.
  • Participate in staff appraisals and supervisions as required.
  • Act as a deputy for pathway leads when necessary.
  • Supervise students on placements, ensuring they receive appropriate support and experience in health services related to children in care.
  • Attend LAC/CAMHS meetings bi-weekly to ensure effective communication and collaboration for the benefit of children in care.
  • Lead initiatives to raise awareness of developments in LAC mental health alongside the wider LAC team.

Clinical Skills

  • Function as an autonomous, registered practitioner, accountable for actions guided by professional standards and Trust protocols.
  • Enhance professional knowledge through accredited courses, workshops, and in-house training.
  • Deliver the highest standard of care to children in care and their families.
  • Initiate referrals to specialist services and monitor progress, seeking additional support as needed.
  • Provide information and education to children in care and their support networks, promoting dignity and quality of life.
  • Ensure practice is evidence-based and aligned with national guidelines.
  • Offer clinical support and direction to junior team members regarding treatment and management.
  • Demonstrate legal literacy and knowledge in supporting children and young people in decision-making.
  • Maintain expert clinical assessment practices for children referred to CAMHS.
  • Promote care practices that minimize the need for hospital admissions.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals and partner agencies to ensure effective communication.
  • Participate in child protection and clinical supervision in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Raise awareness of risks faced by vulnerable children as they transition into adulthood.
  • Foster a trauma-informed culture that acknowledges the lived experiences of looked after children.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered social worker
  • Mental Health Nurse

  • Approved mental health practitioner

  • Extensive experience working with children and young people with mental health needs

  • Experience in engaging service users and co-production

Knowledge
