Job Overview

In light of a recent internal service re-organization, we are excited to announce an opportunity for a dynamic new role within our acute Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service.

The successful candidate will engage in a diverse range of responsibilities, assisting the acute SLT team with various administrative and clinical functions. This includes collecting essential background information, coordinating with community services, and delivering face-to-face therapy sessions and assessment activities developed by the SLT team.

You will be part of a collaborative team, working alongside two additional SLT Assistants focused on Neuro and Head and Neck Cancer, as well as a supportive and experienced SLT team and our dedicated administrative staff.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Conduct designated patient assessments in collaboration with qualified speech and language therapists.
  • Independently perform specific tasks for individual patients or groups as part of their treatment and rehabilitation plans, including computer-based therapy and group sessions.
  • Work with patients with dysphagia as directed by speech and language therapists, depending on caseload demands.
  • Communicate effectively with speech and language therapists and other multidisciplinary team members regarding any changes in patient conditions or other pertinent information.
  • Prepare therapy materials, patient personal history documentation, and low-tech communication aids under the guidance of speech and language therapists.
  • Provide and receive information with tact, sensitivity, and diplomacy, particularly when interacting with patients.
  • Implement treatment interventions, assess results, and communicate progress or outcomes with qualified therapists.
  • Ensure patients understand treatment proposals, obtain valid informed consent, and work within legal frameworks for patients who may lack the capacity to consent.
  • Maintain knowledge of various communication disorders, including dysarthria and dyspraxia.
  • Provide information about supportive agencies available to patients to enhance their recovery.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE level education.
  • Proficient spoken and written English skills.

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Basic understanding of the role of a Speech and Language Therapist.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in a Speech and Language Therapy support role.
