About the Position


The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council is in search of a Portfolio Manager to become a vital part of our Research and Innovation Funding Delivery (RIFD) team. This team is dedicated to overseeing the management, peer evaluation, and allocation of research and innovation grants. The focus of this role will be on guiding the evaluation of groundbreaking research proposals from the academic sector aimed at addressing significant bioscience issues. We are looking for a candidate with a solid understanding of Life Sciences and a passion for collaborating with universities, research institutions, and businesses both in the UK and internationally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with colleagues to develop and establish new funding initiatives.
  • Overseeing the grant application, evaluation, and awarding processes for funding activities; ensuring a thorough external peer review of applications and managing expert assessment panels.
  • Utilizing knowledge of funding programs and policies to offer guidance to the research and innovation community as well as internal staff on grant applications, funding policies, and peer review procedures.
  • Organizing and leading peer review meetings across the UK, ensuring fair and comprehensive assessment of all applications.
  • Providing outreach and advisory support to the research and innovation community and other stakeholders regarding funding programs, processes, and policies.
  • Applying expertise in the scientific portfolio and funding processes to enhance the ongoing improvement of application, assessment, and award procedures; supporting the office and research community during the implementation of changes.

Candidate Profile:

  • A degree in a biological or related field, along with relevant professional experience.
  • A clear interest in and understanding of the objectives of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple activities to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of working collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to create clear and structured documents and presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Analytical skills with the capability to interpret data and extract meaningful insights accurately and responsibly.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally and to work a minimum of four days per month at the designated office location.
