Program DetailsApply for funding to enhance your understanding of the market potential for your bioscience innovation, boost market visibility, and gain insights into possible technological applications.
This initiative is open to bioscience researchers, including PhD candidates, technicians, postdoctoral research associates, fellows, and group leaders, affiliated with UK universities, BBSRC-funded institutes, and recognized public sector research entities.
The program offers funding of up to £3,700 for an eight-week, part-time online market discovery initiative.
The market discovery program employs lean start-up principles, applying the scientific method (hypothesize, test, and evaluate) to the process of commercialisation.
Eligibility CriteriaThe program is accessible to bioscience researchers in:
- UK universities
- BBSRC-funded institutes
- Approved public sector research organizations
While a complete team is not mandatory for participation, it is advisable to be aware of your technology transfer office and to inform your principal scientific advisor or senior researcher.
It is essential that your application has been approved by your organization prior to submission, confirming your commitment to the program.
Team CompositionActive participation from the entrepreneurial lead is required throughout the program. Typically, BBSRC ICURe Discover teams consist of two to four members supporting the entrepreneurial lead:
Entrepreneurial LeadThis role can be filled by any research or technical staff member, including PhD students, technicians, postdoctoral research associates, fellows, or group leaders, receiving their salary or stipend from an eligible institution.
The entrepreneurial lead must be able to commit to the program's duration, starting with the bootcamp, and have the backing of their institute or organization.
Principal Scientific AdvisorA researcher who provides intellectual guidance to the entrepreneurial lead throughout the program. For interdisciplinary projects, input from outside the research group may be necessary.
Technology Transfer RepresentativeA team member, either from or contracted to the research organization, responsible for leading the commercialisation of the intellectual asset with relevant technology transfer expertise.
This individual must:
- Attend essential bootcamp sessions and additional program activities
- Support the entrepreneurial lead and team during the program
- Provide ongoing support for further commercialisation efforts after the program concludes
A motivated individual from a relevant industry sector who can offer expert advice and support. Teams are strongly encouraged to include a business advisor in their application.
