Apply for funding to enhance your understanding of the potential market for your bioscience-based concept, elevate market visibility, and gain insights into possible technological applications.

The BBSRC ICURe Discover initiative is available to bioscience researchers, including PhD candidates, technicians, postdoctoral research associates, fellows, and group leaders, affiliated with UK universities, BBSRC-funded institutes, and recognized public sector research entities.

Funding of up to £3,700 is provided for an eight-week, part-time online market discovery program.

This discovery program is structured using lean start-up principles, applying the scientific method (hypothesize, test, and evaluate) to the commercialization process.

Eligibility Criteria

The BBSRC ICURe Discover program is open to bioscience researchers in:

  • UK universities
  • BBSRC-funded institutes
  • Approved public sector research enterprises (PSREs)

While a complete team is not mandatory for participation, it is advisable to be familiar with your technology transfer office and to inform your principal scientific advisor or senior researcher.

It is essential that your application has been approved by your organization prior to submission, ensuring your commitment to the program.

Team Composition

Active participation from the entrepreneurial lead is required throughout the program. Typically, BBSRC ICURe Discover teams consist of two to four members supporting the entrepreneurial lead:

Entrepreneurial Lead

This role can be filled by any research or technical staff member, including but not limited to PhD students, technicians, postdoctoral research associates, fellows, and group leaders, who receive their salary or stipend from an eligible university, PSRE, or institute. This individual must be able to commit for the duration of the program and have the approval of their institute or organization.

Principal Scientific Advisor

A researcher providing intellectual support to the entrepreneurial lead throughout the program. Input from outside the research group may be necessary for interdisciplinary projects.

Technology Transfer Representative

A team member from or contracted to the research organization, responsible for leading the commercialization of the intellectual asset with appropriate expertise in technology transfer. This individual must:

  • Attend essential bootcamp sessions and additional activities
  • Support the entrepreneurial lead and team during the program
  • Provide ongoing support for further commercialization efforts after the program concludes
Business Advisor

A motivated individual from a relevant industry sector who can offer expert guidance and support. Teams are strongly encouraged to include a business advisor in their application.
