Advanced Clinical Fellow in Critical Care Medicine

London, Greater London, United Kingdom University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

We invite applications for prestigious positions tailored for senior trainees or post-CCT physicians specializing in Critical Care Medicine. These roles are divided into two distinct pathways: one focuses on advanced echocardiography training integrated into routine critical care, while the other emphasizes the development and execution of a critical care research initiative, either translational or clinical in nature. The allocation of time is approximately 50% dedicated to critical care shifts and 50% to fellowship activities in echocardiography or research, depending on the chosen pathway.

Key Responsibilities

Located within a leading healthcare institution, successful candidates will engage in clinical responsibilities while enhancing their expertise in critical care through either Critical Care Echo & Ultrasound or Research. Clinical responsibilities will include serving as a senior trainee in Intensive Care (levels 2 and 3) or providing outreach support under the guidance of Critical Care consultants. This role offers the chance to collaborate with a renowned multidisciplinary team, addressing the needs of general medical or surgical patients, as well as specialized services.

A significant aspect of this position is the opportunity to undertake a fully funded specialist fellowship, allowing for the acquisition of advanced skills pertinent to intensive care. Fellows will participate in dedicated programs focusing on either Echo (primarily transthoracic) or Research, with substantial time allocated for skill development. The fellowship is structured to accommodate ICM ST6 trainees during their SSM year, and bespoke fellowships can be arranged for suitable candidates.

We are dedicated to diagnosing and treating a wide array of complex conditions, with a focus on women's health, cancer treatment, infectious diseases, and various other medical specialties. Our support services, including critical care, imaging, nuclear medicine, and pathology, are of the highest caliber.

Fellowship Details

Echo fellows will receive comprehensive training in transthoracic critical care echocardiography, including imaging, interpretation, and clinical integration to a level 2 standard. They will become integral members of a fully operational critical care echo service, which functions seven days a week. Candidates will be supported in achieving the necessary level 2 qualifications, with fellowship durations typically ranging from 18 to 24 months, although those with adequate skills may complete the program in 12 months.

Research fellows will focus on translational topics related to infection and immunology. While prior laboratory experience is advantageous, it is not mandatory. The fellow is expected to develop essential laboratory skills, including cell culture and flow cytometry. For those with existing laboratory experience and a viable hypothesis, support will be provided to facilitate their research endeavors. Clinical research projects may concentrate on hyperinflammation, cancer, cardiovascular health, or infectious diseases. Previous fellows have successfully presented their findings at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Support for pursuing higher research degrees (MD or PhD) is also available.

We encourage applications from both UK and international candidates, with a GMC sponsorship program in place for eligible individuals. All applicants should possess substantial experience in Critical Care Medicine, with a diverse range of backgrounds considered. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in airway management and have achieved competencies equivalent to the ST5 training year and relevant qualifications.

Previous critical care experience and appropriate airway skills are essential for this role. Candidates should ideally possess prior research experience for research fellowships or foundational echo skills for echo fellowships. Self-motivation and excellent time management abilities are crucial attributes for prospective candidates.

Interested candidates are encouraged to explore the opportunity further and discuss the fellowship details. When submitting applications, candidates should articulate their interest in specific fellowship pathways and provide reasons for their suitability for the chosen program.
