Position Overview
The critical care division at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is renowned for its clinical excellence and robust research initiatives. We cater to both local and regional populations, offering specialized tertiary critical care services. Our facilities are equipped with cutting-edge technology, point-of-care diagnostics, and electronic prescribing systems.
Key Responsibilities
The fellow will engage in direct patient care while also fulfilling essential non-clinical roles within the service.
Comprehensive training in advanced respiratory support techniques will be provided, covering a range of modalities including conventional ventilation, airway pressure release ventilation (APRV), prone positioning, nitric oxide therapy, ECMO, and ECCO2R. This training will encompass theoretical learning, hands-on simulation, and bedside instruction.
- Clinical responsibilities will include:
- Involvement in the management of patients requiring ECMO and ECCO2R.
- Preparation and presentation of clinical cases during weekly meetings, along with documentation of discussions.
- Follow-up care for patients who have undergone advanced respiratory interventions.
- Participation in the retrieval of patients referred for assessment and support of severe respiratory failure.
- Contributing to the overall clinical workload of the ICU, serving as a senior team leader during out-of-hours shifts, and providing support to junior team members.
- Non-clinical responsibilities will include:
- Maintaining the SRF database.
- Engaging in audit projects focused on severe respiratory failure.
- Contributing to research initiatives related to severe respiratory failure.
- Attending service-related meetings and aiding in the development of the severe respiratory failure program.

Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- FRCA/MRCP/MRCS or equivalent qualification.
- Eligibility for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.
- Minimum of 18 months substantive experience in intensive care medicine.
- Valid adult life support (ALS) certification.
- Proven airway management skills.
Desirable:
- DICM/EDIC or equivalent qualification in intensive care medicine.
- Experience with advanced respiratory life support therapies.
- Demonstrable research and teaching experience.
