This position seeks a Director of Transport Operations who will manage and enhance all facets of logistics operations within the transport and distribution sector. The ideal candidate will focus on boosting operational efficiency, elevating customer satisfaction, and achieving corporate goals.

Client Overview

Our client is a prominent consolidator in the ambient grocery sector, equipped with extensive warehousing and distribution capabilities.

The organization consolidates full loads from its clientele, which includes food producers and importers, and distributes across the UK on a daily basis to major supermarkets, cash and carry outlets, and food service clients. E-fulfilment, repacking, and a Palletline operation complement the primary consolidation services.

Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses several critical areas:

  • Driving the formulation and execution of a strategic initiative aimed at significantly enhancing the Transport function over the next five years, with a primary emphasis on safety.
  • Leading, managing, and optimizing existing technologies to foster data-driven decision-making within the transport division.
  • Assessing the effectiveness of management teams and cultivating the appropriate leadership structures to both enhance current operations and spearhead development.
  • Overseeing key supplier relationships, engaging with industry bodies, and nurturing connections across the sector, including with major clients.
  • Managing the financial aspects of the transport division, ensuring projects align with their designated budgets, and establishing rates with carriers and service providers.
  • Assuming full accountability for Health & Safety, Environmental standards, and welfare within Transport, ensuring compliance with the highest operational standards.
  • Creating annual transport plans and budgets, along with managing financial controls, analysis, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Developing and implementing a backhaul strategy to maximize opportunities throughout the supply chain.
  • Leading all internal stakeholders within the Transport department to uphold the highest standards in accordance with customer requirements and relevant legislation/audits.
  • Overseeing the entire fleet of company vehicles, including procurement and scheduling operations.
  • Ensuring that the Transport Operation adheres to quality and legislative standards, while setting and agreeing on targets and KPIs in alignment with corporate strategy.

Candidate Profile

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Extensive experience within a national FMCG organization.
  • Strong financial acumen and commercial management skills, with a proven track record of managing and exceeding budgetary expectations.
  • Experience in change management and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • International & National Certificate in Professional Competence (CPC).
  • Membership in the Institute of Logistics or Freight Transport Association.
  • Operational experience across multiple sites.
  • The capability to engage with cross-functional teams (e.g., Warehouse Director, Commercial Director, Finance Director, Head of HR) to ensure all relevant parties are informed and transitions are managed effectively.
  • A solid understanding of fleet procurement processes and the technologies that influence Transport, including modeling, planning, and telematics systems (e.g., SAP, Microlise, BI, and Contrado).
