Position Overview

Lead Commercial Strategist - Clinical Services Division

The Commercial Delivery division is tasked with overseeing all NHS England's commercial operations related to third-party expenditures, encompassing every phase of the commercial lifecycle, including Market Management, Strategic Commercial Planning, Procurement, Contract Oversight, and Strategic Supplier Relationship Management.

This team manages a substantial portfolio, overseeing more than 4,400 active contracts with a cumulative lifetime value exceeding £14 billion, alongside a procurement pipeline that estimates over £11 billion. This represents one of the most extensive and intricate commercial portfolios within the government, offering team members the chance to engage in high-value and complex commercial operations that significantly enhance patient care.

The Lead Commercial Strategist within the Clinical Services Division is ideally suited for an individual with robust contract oversight and commercial expertise, eager to foster strategic and beneficial commercial results for various Directorates while managing intricate commercial agreements.

This role is crucial within the NHS England Commercial Delivery division, focusing on the management of key contracts and ensuring compliance with the NHS England Contract Management Framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee a portfolio of complex and strategically significant contracts and suppliers throughout the commercial lifecycle.
  • Assess contract performance, deliverables, and obligations, holding suppliers accountable for any shortcomings.
  • Provide commercial insights and guidance to colleagues in program and business sectors responsible for contract management.
  • Collaborate with the Commercial team and broader stakeholders to identify and address commercial risks and challenges promptly and effectively.
  • Enhance commercial acumen and proficiency within your area of responsibility.
  • Cultivate trusted collaborative relationships across NHS England, ensuring the commercial team is involved early and throughout the commercial process.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of relevant markets and business contexts pertinent to the category to inform and support the development of commercial strategies.

Role Expectations

As a Lead Commercial Strategist , the incumbent will be part of a dynamic team, playing a pivotal role in effectively managing our supplier base and delivering successful commercial outcomes while navigating complex and challenging decisions across NHS England.

This position is designed for an individual with substantial experience, a strong strategic perspective, and exceptional leadership qualities, seeking to advance towards senior-level accountability within a fast-paced, highly professional Commercial Directorate. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience across a diverse range of requirements and disciplines. The role necessitates demonstrable commercial experience working with a varied group of senior stakeholders, alongside effective consultancy skills to quickly establish credibility; comprehending and interpreting complex and detailed information to provide well-received advice and expertise through strong stakeholder engagement. The candidate must exhibit comprehensive communication and engagement skills that are likely to result in successfully influencing outcomes.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential Qualifications

  • A master's degree or equivalent experience at a senior level in a specialized area.
  • MCIPS accreditation or evidence of equivalent experience.
  • IACCM Expert status or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated specialist knowledge across various disciplines and commercial practices.

  • Highly developed communication skills capable of analyzing, reviewing, and interpreting complex, sensitive, or contentious information across a diverse range of subjects.
  • Proven ability to present intricate concepts and information, including challenging and controversial issues, to a wide audience.
