Overview of the Role

The primary aim of this position is to assist the senior nursing team in delivering exceptional patient care within the department. This role encompasses the management, oversight, and coordination of nursing operations, ensuring that care standards are upheld and necessary corrective measures are implemented when required.

A key aspect of this role is to maintain a prominent, approachable, and authoritative presence within the department, serving as a reliable resource for staff, patients, and their families seeking guidance and support.

Key Responsibilities

- Oversee the daily operations of the department in collaboration with the senior outpatient team and Matron.

- Act as a trainer, assessor, mentor, and supervisor for nursing personnel to ensure the safe and effective administration of systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT).

- Support the organization and execution of clinics.

- Investigate and contribute to the resolution of formal complaints and incidents.

- Monitor staff attendance, manage sickness records, and facilitate staff returns to work following absences.

- Coordinate and oversee duty rosters, ensuring an adequate skill mix to support clinical activities effectively.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Completion of the national PEAP program for practice supervisors or an equivalent teaching and assessing qualification
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of post-registration academic achievement at degree level or equivalent

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Significant experience at Band 5
  • Knowledge and interest in the care of oncology patients

Desirable Criteria

  • Core competencies in systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT)

Further Training

Essential Criteria

  • Skills in venepuncture and cannulation

Desirable Criteria

  • Leadership training or qualification
