Position Overview

Background Information

The Nature Conservation and Policy Advice (NCPA) Team at the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is integral to the preservation of natural environments across the UK. Collaborating with various partners, including national conservation bodies and governmental entities, the team oversees the development and implementation of nature conservation policies and legislation. Our mission involves facilitating collaborative efforts on critical topics and providing evidence-based solutions to environmental challenges.

This role focuses on supporting UK and regional engagement initiatives, contributing to projects related to biodiversity, protected areas, and species documentation. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the coordination of UK efforts concerning protected areas, particularly in relation to JNCC's obligations under relevant environmental regulations.
  • Facilitating effective communication with UK governmental bodies and partner organizations to advance policies aimed at nature recovery, including the Global Biodiversity Framework.
  • Managing and optimizing various datasets related to species and habitats, such as the Great Britain Red Lists and ecosystem service assessments.
  • Providing administrative support to various working groups, including organizing meetings, compiling documents, and maintaining communication with group members.

Role Responsibilities

The primary focus of this position is to deliver project support to the NCPA Team. This includes active participation in groups for which the team provides administrative assistance.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Country Liaison Officers, Senior Biodiversity Advisors, and team leaders. Responsibilities will encompass a variety of projects, data collection, and advisory requests related to biodiversity, protected areas, species documentation, land use, and relevant legislation. This will involve engaging with governmental bodies and conservation organizations, with a strong emphasis on UK coordination efforts.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing administrative support for various groups, including organizing meetings, taking notes, and following up on action items.
  • Assisting with NCPA initiatives related to biodiversity, protected areas, species documentation, land use, and environmental legislation.
  • Supporting team projects through various tasks, such as creating content for JNCC's website and newsletters, analyzing new policies, conducting research, and utilizing basic GIS skills for data exploration.
  • Coordinating events such as meetings, workshops, and webinars, including planning logistics and reporting outcomes.
  • Offering general support to the NCPA team, including project management, administrative tasks, and fostering team collaboration.

Additionally, depending on experience, the candidate will:

  • Work effectively within a team to achieve collective goals while also demonstrating the ability to lead specific tasks as needed.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with partners and stakeholders.
  • Possess knowledge of ecology and nature conservation practices in the UK.
  • Assist in data collection, review, and management for various species and related datasets.
