Background Information

The Nature Conservation and Policy Advice (NCPA) Team at the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is instrumental in promoting biodiversity conservation across the UK. This team collaborates with various stakeholders, including national conservation bodies, governmental entities, and the broader conservation community. Our focus is on maintaining a comprehensive understanding of UK conservation policies and regulations, facilitating collaborative efforts on significant topics, and addressing environmental challenges through evidence-based strategies.

This role is designed to assist in the coordination of UK and regional engagement initiatives, contributing to projects related to biodiversity, protected areas, and species data management. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the coordination of efforts related to protected areas, particularly concerning JNCC's obligations under environmental regulations and relevant international agreements.
  • Facilitating effective collaboration with UK governmental bodies and partner organizations to advance policies aimed at nature recovery, particularly in line with global biodiversity commitments.
  • Managing and optimizing various datasets related to species and habitats, including the Great Britain Red Lists and ecosystem service evaluations.
  • Providing secretariat support for multiple working groups, including organizing meetings, preparing documentation, and ensuring effective communication among group members.

Role Responsibilities

The primary objective of this position is to deliver project support to the NCPA Team. This includes contributing to the various groups for which the team provides secretariat services.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Country Liaison Officers, Senior Biodiversity Advisors, and team leaders. Responsibilities will encompass a range of projects, evidence collection, and advisory tasks related to biodiversity, protected areas, species management, land use, and relevant legislation. Engagement with governmental and conservation bodies will be a critical aspect of this role.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing secretariat services for designated groups, which involves organizing meetings, documenting discussions, tracking action items, and preparing agendas and reports.
  • Supporting the NCPA Team's initiatives concerning UK biodiversity, protected areas, species management, land use, and environmental legislation.
  • Assisting with various projects across the team, which may involve creating content for JNCC's online platforms, analyzing new policies, conducting research, and utilizing basic GIS skills for data exploration.
  • Coordinating events such as meetings, workshops, and webinars, ensuring smooth logistics and effective communication.
  • Offering administrative and project management support to enhance team collaboration and efficiency.

Additionally, depending on the candidate's experience, the role may involve:

  • Working collaboratively within a team to achieve collective goals while also taking the lead on specific tasks as required.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with partners and stakeholders.
  • Applying knowledge of UK ecology and conservation practices.
  • Assisting in data collection, review, and management for various species and relevant datasets.

Technical Qualifications
