Background Information
The Nature Conservation and Policy Advice (NCPA) Team at the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is integral to the advancement of biodiversity initiatives across the UK. Collaborating with various stakeholders, including national conservation bodies and governmental entities, the team oversees UK nature conservation policies and legislation. Our mission includes facilitating collaborative efforts on significant environmental topics and providing evidence-based solutions to address ecological challenges.
This role is designed to bolster UK and regional engagement efforts, focusing on biodiversity projects, protected area management, and species cataloging. Key responsibilities encompass:
- Assisting in the coordination of protected area initiatives, particularly in relation to JNCC's obligations under environmental regulations and international agreements.
- Enhancing collaboration with UK government entities and partner organizations to foster the development and execution of nature recovery policies, including the Global Biodiversity Framework.
- Managing and optimizing various species and habitat datasets, such as the Great Britain Red Lists and ecosystem service assessments.
- Providing administrative support to multiple working groups, including organizing meetings, compiling documentation, and drafting agendas and minutes.
Role Responsibilities
The primary focus of this position is to deliver project support to the NCPA Team. This includes contributions to various groups for which the team provides administrative assistance.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Country Liaison Officers, Senior Biodiversity Advisors, and NCPA team leaders. This role encompasses a variety of projects, evidence collection, and advisory requests related to biodiversity, protected areas, species documentation, land use, and policy development. Engagement with governmental and conservation bodies is crucial for the JNCC's coordination efforts.
The key duties include:
- Serving as the administrative support for various groups, which involves organizing meetings, taking notes, following up on action items, and assisting in the preparation of agendas and reports.
- Supporting NCPA's initiatives concerning UK biodiversity, protected areas, species documentation, land use, and environmental policy.
- Assisting with team projects through various tasks, such as creating content for the JNCC website and newsletters, analyzing new policies, conducting research, and managing datasets using basic GIS and data analysis tools.
- Coordinating events such as meetings, workshops, and webinars, including planning, logistics, facilitation, and reporting.
- Providing support to the NCPA team in areas such as planning, administration, project management, and fostering team collaboration.
Additionally, depending on experience, the candidate will:
- Work effectively within a team to achieve collective goals while also leading specific tasks as necessary.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with partners and stakeholders.
- Demonstrate knowledge of ecology and nature conservation within the UK context.
- Assist in data collection, review, and management for various species and relevant datasets.
