About the Role

PIMCO, a global leader in active fixed income, is seeking a senior economist/strategist to augment its EMEA team's portfolio management effort. The ideal candidate will specialize in Emerging Markets in the region and contribute to developed markets as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research with the portfolio committee to formulate macro strategy and generate relevant economic analysis, focusing on high-frequency macro variables, inflation, growth, and balance of payments information.
  • Perform detailed balance sheet analysis, particularly for distressed sovereigns, and demonstrate the ability to conduct thorough scenario analysis, including stress testing assumptions against market consensus.
  • Compare and contrast investment opportunities across different structures, focusing on relative value opportunities in sovereign credit, including quasi-sovereigns and local government bond markets.
  • Contribute to research through on-the-ground country trips and frequent market updates, with a focus on investment recommendations and implementable strategy.
  • Support new business development through marketing and client engagements globally.
Ideal Candidate
  • Minimum of five years' experience in regional economics.
  • Extremely strong quantitative background.
  • Tangible experience in analyzing EM sovereign balance sheets and demonstrable skills in implementing portfolio investment ideas.
  • Masters or PhD in Economics or Finance, with IFI experience a plus.
Critical Competencies for Success
  • Demonstrated skill in sovereign balance sheet analysis, particularly in EM economies, on behalf of sell-side or buy-side firms.
  • Highly quantitative approach to analysis.
  • Ability to think about how to structure and optimize portfolios.
  • Ability to work closely with Portfolio Managers, Analysts, and Account Managers in a collaborative manner.
  • Effective client presentation skills and ability to articulate PIMCO's philosophy and process to support the franchise.
  • Strong communications skills, internally and externally, to manage the flow of information from the markets to internal constituencies.
