Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a skilled professional to become a part of the Clinical Research Team at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. We are seeking a dedicated Clinical Research Specialist to join our dynamic team focused on Microbiology, Infection, Critical Care, and Emergency Services. Our team is composed of multi-disciplinary experts committed to delivering top-notch patient care while successfully recruiting for a diverse array of research studies and clinical trials.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the multi-disciplinary research team and contribute to the management structure, aiding in the development of junior staff.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of trial protocols, research methodologies, and the requirements of local, national, and international research regulations.
  • Facilitate effective communication within the service and actively engage in local and national networking groups to enhance expertise.

Clinical Duties

The Clinical Research Specialist will:

  • Understand and apply ICH GCP Guidelines, the EU Directive on Clinical Research, and Research Governance.
  • Identify eligible patients for clinical trials and research studies, which may involve attending clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Ensure that patients and their caregivers receive comprehensive written information regarding the research study and have the opportunity to discuss it thoroughly.
  • Support patients in the clinical environment for monitoring, assessment, and follow-up as part of research projects.
  • Obtain informed consent from participants and collect relevant patient samples for clinical trials, ensuring adherence to defined protocols.
  • Monitor patients for treatment toxicity and side effects, escalating findings as necessary.

Research Management

The role will also involve:

  • Coordinating and supporting researchers in completing research Capacity and Capability assessments to obtain necessary authorizations.
  • Implementing national best practice research management processes within the Trust.
  • Identifying and addressing specific feasibility issues to ensure timely review and setup of studies.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Registered adult nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and substantial post-registration clinical experience.
  • Experience in clinical trial delivery and research.

Desirable:

  • Specialist training in clinical research and willingness to pursue further academic training.
  • Experience in relevant clinical specialties and the clinical care of patients enrolled in research studies.
