Job Overview

OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION - To deliver middle-grade coverage for the Supra Regional Paediatric Liver Service.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical:

Supervise Senior House Officers and collaborate with Specialist Registrars in the daily management of liver patients within the designated wards, outpatient clinics, and day case units.

Ensure high-quality communication, both verbal and written, with patients, their families, general practitioners, and referring specialists.

Oversee all documentation and care protocols for paediatric hepatology inpatients.

Participate in consultant-led ward rounds.

Teaching:

Assist in the education of undergraduate medical students alongside specialist registrars and consultants.

Research/Audit:

Engage in departmental research initiatives and audits, which are highly encouraged.

Administrative:

Manage the daily operations of junior medical staff.

The Paediatric Liver Centre, recognized as a supra-regional tertiary referral facility, has been operational since 1986 and is the largest of its kind in the UK. It boasts an international reputation for excellence in research and the delivery of high-quality clinical services for children suffering from acute and chronic liver diseases, metabolic liver disorders, pre and post-liver transplant care, short bowel syndrome, and complex hepatobiliary surgeries. Current research endeavors encompass autoimmune liver diseases, biliary atresia, cholestatic liver disorders, hepatocyte transplantation, viral hepatitis, and acute liver failure.

Job Responsibilities

Training Description:

Clinical Training and Responsibilities:

Advanced management of intricate hepatological and gastrointestinal conditions, including fulminant hepatic failure and short bowel syndrome.

Diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic liver diseases, metabolic liver disorders, and liver tumors.

Evaluation of patients for liver and small bowel transplantation.

Comprehensive care during pre, intra, and post-transplant phases.

Management of post-transplant immunosuppression protocols.

Provide counseling to parents of children with complex hepatic and gastrointestinal issues.

Follow-up care for children with complicated liver disorders and chronic intestinal conditions.

Conduct nutritional assessments, including dietary requirements and enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

Collaborate with other specialists, including surgery, radiology, and pathology.

Participate in research and audits within the fields of hepatology, immunology, and gastroenterology.

Develop teaching skills for undergraduate students and enhance awareness of educational resources.

Experience Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

Minimum of 2 years of experience in paediatrics.

Required Qualifications:

MB BS or equivalent medical degree.

Skills Required:

Comprehensive understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of paediatric hepatology services.
