Clinical Education Fellow in Paediatrics

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Whittington Hospital NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity for a Clinical Education Fellow to enhance paediatric educational initiatives at Whittington Hospital NHS Trust and collaborate within our Integrated Care System (ICS) - North London Partners.

This newly established position aims to provide comprehensive training in clinical paediatrics and educational methodologies. The selected candidate will gain valuable insights into educational reform across the ICS, making it an ideal opportunity for individuals seeking to step away from full-time clinical training to focus on their development as educators and to understand systemic changes within the NHS.

Key Responsibilities

This is a one-year position. The appointee will allocate 60% of their time to educational activities and 40% to clinical training, with no out-of-hours obligations. The educational component will consist of 20% dedicated to undergraduate instruction and 40% to postgraduate education. The fellow will be encouraged to foster cross-trust educational collaborations within the North London sector and utilize the research and clinical training resources available at Whittington Hospital and local clinical networks.

While the post holder may opt to engage in out-of-hours work through our internal locum agency, this is entirely voluntary.

About Whittington Hospital NHS Trust

Whittington Hospital serves a diverse community and is committed to ensuring equitable access to all services. This commitment extends to our workforce, as we strive to employ individuals who reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We recognize the importance of inclusivity in our recruitment, training, and promotion practices, believing that a diverse workforce enhances our ability to provide exceptional patient care and creates a supportive work environment.

Educational and Training Responsibilities (60% of Role)

The fellow will concentrate on advancing educational practices in paediatrics and child health at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Collaboration with the undergraduate teaching fellow will be essential, sharing responsibilities and contributing to regional postgraduate education across the North London sector. The fellow will have the opportunity to refine their teaching skills while supporting the development of these skills in others.

Flexibility regarding specific projects will be provided, with discussions held to align on goals. The overarching aim is to support the multidisciplinary team in delivering high-quality patient care through education and training. The fellow will assess the educational needs of clinical staff managing paediatric patients and gather feedback from local paediatric patients and their families to enhance care quality. This will involve qualitative assessments, including interviews and focus groups, leading to the design of multidisciplinary educational events aimed at refreshing clinical knowledge and practice.

The fellow will establish a timeline of objectives to achieve throughout the year and will report monthly on project progress to the relevant educational body.

Additionally, the fellow will be encouraged to build a clinical educational portfolio and develop a personalized learning plan that includes suitable educational opportunities. Support will be provided for pursuing advanced qualifications in Medical Education and participation in leadership programs.

Clinical Responsibilities and Training (40% of Role)

The fellow will engage in two days of clinical work each week. Clinical responsibilities will be tailored to the fellow's experience and training needs, likely involving placements in general paediatrics, paediatric emergency care, or neonatal services, all under clinical supervision. We particularly welcome candidates with leadership skills and clinical expertise to innovate service delivery models.

Participation in out-of-hours work is optional and not guaranteed.
