Main Duties

This senior midwifery leadership position is a vital component of the regional nursing and midwifery management team, collaborating closely with the regional Chief Midwife and various maternity and neonatal teams. The successful candidate will also liaise with the regional Chief Nurse, Chief Obstetrician, Executive Team, specialized commissioning, and senior leadership within the Integrated Care Boards.

As the Assistant Regional Chief Midwife, you will support the Regional Chief Midwife in delivering strategic leadership and professional guidance, working with key stakeholders to ensure that the NHS objectives are met through effective commissioning and delivery of safe and personalized maternity services.

The Regional Maternity Team is led by the Regional Chief Midwife, supported by various roles including the Obstetric Lead, Assistant Chief Midwife, Service User Voice Lead, and Project Managers, all working together within the London Maternity Clinical Network.

Job Responsibilities

Support the execution of the Three-Year Delivery Plan for maternity and neonatal services, along with other national review recommendations, to enhance care and safety across the region.

Assist the Regional Chief Midwife in overseeing maternity services and ensuring the capacity and capability to meet the objectives outlined in the delivery plan and other policies.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders and regulatory bodies to share intelligence and provide consistent support where necessary.

Establish mechanisms for the early identification and resolution of issues affecting quality and safety.

Support the Regional Chief Midwife in providing strategic professional leadership.

Set the direction for the midwifery profession by advocating for regional priorities and representing the Chief Midwife on national platforms and committees.

Enhance midwifery leadership capacity across the region.

Fulfill responsibilities related to promoting quality improvement initiatives, including various national programs aimed at enhancing maternity care.

Build connections with other teams and partners to ensure midwifery is effectively integrated into system networking and leadership.

Work collaboratively with national and regional teams to shape strategy and implementation, ensuring equity and midwifery perspectives are integrated at all levels.

Champion local maternity networks as vehicles for change, promoting collaboration among clinicians, service users, and other stakeholders.

Support the development and growth of the midwifery workforce across the region.

As the Assistant Regional Chief Midwife, you will lead and collaborate with a dynamic team to deliver the program, working with nursing and quality directorates, senior managers, and local maternity leads to ensure safe, evidence-based maternity care that aligns with national policy ambitions.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife.
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in a senior role within a specialized area.
  • Membership in a relevant professional organization.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Extensive expert knowledge in midwifery and maternity strategy and policy.
  • Significant leadership experience at the local maternity system level or equivalent management qualifications.
  • Experience in leading complex change and strategy development in a politically sensitive environment.
  • Proven ability to manage a substantial budget with a solid understanding of financial processes.
