The Opportunity

As the Chief Underwriting Executive for Retail at Munich Re Specialty Group, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing all technical underwriting functions across Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. Your leadership will ensure the highest standards of underwriting quality and adherence to established guidelines and protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive Retail underwriting strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and client-focused initiatives.
  • Direct and manage all technical underwriting operations, fostering a culture of excellence and proficiency across the team.
  • Collaborate closely with Global Product CUOs and Heads to innovate and refine product offerings, maintaining consistency in rates, rules, and policy forms.
  • Work in partnership with Country Managing Directors and local Heads of Underwriting to optimize the portfolio performance across the regions.
  • Oversee the implementation of underwriting authority delegation and referral processes to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Continuously monitor market trends and developments to adapt underwriting policies and strategies accordingly.
  • Mentor and lead a high-performing team of Country Heads of Underwriting, contributing to talent acquisition and retention efforts.

What We Seek

  • Proven experience in an executive leadership role, preferably as a Chief Underwriting Officer or equivalent.
  • Deep understanding of exposure and experience rating methodologies.
  • Extensive technical expertise in single risk and delegated underwriting within Specialty lines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a strong focus on stakeholder engagement.
  • Integrity, credibility, and a commitment to the corporate mission.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strategic mindset with a solid track record in business management, including planning and forecasting.
  • Cultural awareness, ideally with experience in diverse regions including Europe and Asia-Pacific.
  • Proficiency in multiple European languages in addition to English is advantageous.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in primary insurance underwriting, ideally across both Retail and Wholesale platforms.
  • Strong background in people management and leadership.
  • Experience in executive roles, particularly in underwriting.
  • Broad knowledge across various lines of business and products.
  • Relevant academic qualifications and professional certifications in insurance.
