About the Role

Munich Re Specialty Group is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Chief Underwriting Officer - Retail to lead our retail underwriting activities in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwriting Strategy and Operations: Develop and implement retail underwriting strategies, policies, and guidelines for Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific, ensuring consistency with Munich Re Specialty Group's objectives and directives.
  • Technical Underwriting Expertise: Direct and manage technical underwriting activities for retail products in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific, ensuring a high level of technical proficiency and adherence to underwriting and pricing guidelines.
  • Product Development: Collaborate with Global Product Chief Underwriting Officers and Global Product Heads to develop new retail products and maintain existing ones, ensuring consistency and quality.
  • Portfolio Management: Work closely with Country Managing Directors and in-country Heads of Underwriting to manage retail portfolios in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific, achieving business mix and performance goals.
  • Underwriting Authority and Referral: Maintain and execute underwriting authority delegation and referral processes in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific.
  • Market Trends and Developments: Monitor insurance market trends and developments in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific, making adjustments to underwriting policy and strategy as needed.
  • Leadership and Talent Management: Coach and lead a high-performance matrix management team of Country Heads of Underwriting, attracting, recruiting, and retaining top talent.
Requirements
  • Executive Leadership Experience: Proven ability in an executive leadership position, ideally as Chief Underwriting Officer, Head of Underwriting, or Product Head.
  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of exposure and experience rating processes, single risk and delegated underwriting in specialty lines of business.
  • People Skills: Excellent people skills, including stakeholder management, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Business Acumen: Strong business acumen, including strategic thinking, planning, and forecasting.
  • Cross-Cultural Savvy: Cross-cultural savvy, ideally having lived and/or worked in Europe (outside the UK) and Asia Pacific.
  • Language Skills: Language skills, ideally speaking +2 main European languages in addition to English.
Key Skills and Experience
  • Primary Insurance Underwriting Experience: Extensive primary insurance underwriting experience, ideally across both retail (non-wholesale) and wholesale (e.g., Lloyd's) platforms.
  • People Management Experience: Extensive people management experience.
  • Executive Position Experience: Strong experience of operating within an executive position, ideally as Chief Underwriting Officer.
  • Multiple Lines of Business Experience: Experience across multiple lines of business/products.
  • Education and Qualifications: University degree and/or relevant professional qualification, relevant insurance qualification.
