Position Overview

Rowcroft Medical Centre is excited to announce an opening for a dedicated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Support Specialist to become a vital part of our collaborative healthcare team. Our pharmacy department has been developed over the past few years, comprising a diverse group of clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. We aim to expand our team with an additional specialist to enhance our service delivery and patient care.

The role of a Pharmacy Support Specialist is integral to our operations and is highly regarded within our organization. This position is ideal for an individual who is committed to primary healthcare and recognizes the significant contributions that pharmacy expertise can make to a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with the pharmacy team to deliver the following:

  • Assist with relevant components of the Quality and Outcomes Framework and the Primary Care Network Contract.
  • Address medication inquiries, oversee medication reconciliation, and manage prescription workflows.
  • Liaise with community and hospital pharmacies to ensure timely access to necessary medications for patients.
  • Advocate for high-quality, evidence-based, and cost-effective prescribing practices in primary care.

Following an orientation period, the successful candidate will work across multiple locations, often alongside our Clinical Pharmacists. As a Pharmacy Support Specialist, you will be part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team focused on delivering high-quality services to our patients.

Role Responsibilities

The pharmacy team plays a crucial role within the General Practice Multidisciplinary Team. This position is part of our ongoing efforts to develop a care model that prioritizes person-centered, coordinated care across the Primary Care Network.

Pharmacy Support Specialists operate under the clinical guidance of the broader team to ensure the effective and efficient use of medications. Core responsibilities include:

  • Providing clinical support in areas such as medication optimization, safety, and quality improvement.
  • Assisting senior team members in identifying improvement opportunities using data from clinical systems and conducting quality enhancement projects.
  • Supporting practices with relevant aspects of the Quality and Outcomes Framework.
  • Managing medication-related inquiries from patients and colleagues, finding solutions, and following up as necessary.
  • Ensuring accurate medication reconciliation following patient discharge from other healthcare settings.
  • Streamlining prescription processes and administrative workflows.
  • Collaborating with primary care colleagues to implement process improvements in managing long-term conditions.
  • Mentoring and supporting other team members, fostering shared learning and best practices.
  • Engaging in mandatory training programs to enhance professional development.
  • Communicating regularly with community and hospital pharmacies to optimize patient outcomes and improve access to healthcare services.
  • Providing patient contact, requiring strong communication skills to effectively deliver service information and lifestyle advice.
  • Contributing to initiatives aimed at promoting responsible antibiotic prescribing.
  • Adapting to changes and embracing new challenges within the healthcare sector.

All Pharmacy Support Specialists must operate within their competencies and know when to refer to senior team members.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Core GCSEs (Maths, English, and Science) grades A-C.

Desirable

  • Training in safeguarding adults and children.
  • Completion of the Information Governance toolkit.
  • Basic life support training.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working as a pharmacy technician or apprentice in primary care, community, or hospital pharmacy.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately.
  • Organized approach with the ability to prioritize workload effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of data protection and confidentiality issues.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with SystmOne clinical system.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret prescribing data.
  • Strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to adjust communication style to suit different audiences.
