Role Overview:

The Assistant Ward Leader plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional nursing care by providing senior leadership to the nursing team in collaboration with the Ward Manager. This position requires a blend of clinical expertise and leadership skills to inspire confidence within the team and ensure high standards of patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement and uphold relevant policies and statutory guidelines within the ward and hospital governance framework, effectively communicating these to the nursing team.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments and manage safety protocols across the ward environment, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations.
  • Champion equality and diversity, fostering an inclusive atmosphere within the team.
  • Identify and address gaps in skill mix and staffing levels to maintain safe and effective care.
  • Supervise a designated group of nursing staff, contributing to their continuous professional development, mandatory training, and performance evaluations, while addressing any performance concerns.
  • Serve as a role model, promoting a culture of learning, inquiry, and shared vision within the team.
  • Oversee the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of therapeutic interventions as part of a comprehensive care program, empowering individuals with mental health and learning disability needs to develop effective coping strategies.
  • Engage in collaborative problem-solving, encouraging clients to take ownership of their challenges and work towards solutions tailored to their unique needs.
  • Participate in the collaborative assessment and management of risks related to harm, danger, and abuse.
  • Act as the named nurse for a select group of patients, serving as the Associate nurse for colleagues during shifts and regularly taking on leadership responsibilities.
