The Department is currently moving into the newly renovated Old Admiralty Building. This Grade II listed building is a fantastic base from which to work, and host UK and international partners alike. As part of our new ways of working, once the situation allows, colleagues should expect, on average, to be in OAB 2-3 days per week.
UK Defence and Security Exports (UK DSE) within DIT supports the defence, security, cyber and space sectors. These are strategically important sectors that contribute significantly to our exports, national prosperity and inward investment, and are fundamental to the UK’s national security and our wider diplomatic and economic interests around the world. Customers in the defence sector are exclusively other Governments, so HMG support is a fundamental component of successful export campaigns. Overseas customers often view procurement of UK equipment as part of a wider bilateral relationship - and the topic regularly occupies discussion time at the most senior bilateral meetings. The requirement for a post Covid-19 economic injection, and the ongoing Integrated Review, make this the time to join this dynamic, cross-cutting strand of HMG’s global engagement.
You would be joining the organisation as a Desk Officer, reporting to the Assistant Head of one of the regional teams. You would be joining the organisation as a Desk Officer, reporting to the Assistant Head of Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Your focus will be working on markets in Africa, but you may be required to support work on markets in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Working with Military and Security Advisers, the Whitehall defence and security community, UK industry and across our diplomatic networks, you will have a high degree of autonomy and personal responsibility to drive exports in your markets with significant long-term strategic importance to the UK.
This high-profile role offers a unique opportunity to simultaneously lead on strands of HMG’s trade and prosperity, defence and security and diplomatic agendas; providing the role-holder with the opportunity to develop broad networks and skills for career growth in any of these areas.
**Job description**:
- Build and maintain working relationships with counterparts across Whitehall, colleagues at Posts and within UK industry.
- Work with Posts, military advisers, and capability advisers to identify and communicate export opportunities to wider UK DSE and to UK industry.
- Lead campaign teams of a range of stakeholders to position the UK as partner of choice and support industry export campaigns.
- Plan and support inward visits from both markets to ensure a complementary balance of HMG and industry engagement, including at exhibitions in the UK.
- Work with wider UK DSE and Posts to plan the UK presence at exhibitions, in your allocated market, including support to UK Ministers and senior officials in attendance.
- Identify and advise on opportunities at all levels to enhance the UK relationships with your allocated market, concentrating on key organisations and stakeholders in relation to defence and security procurement.
- Develop and maintain a broader understanding of the region and interdependencies to support core work, as well as that of the wider team.
The role will be based in London.
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
