UK Defence and Security Exports (UK DSE) within Department for Business & Trade supports the defence, security, cyber and civil maritime sectors. These are strategically important sectors that contribute significantly to our exports, national prosperity and inward investment, and are fundamental to the UK’s national security and our wider diplomatic and economic interests around the world. Customers in the defence sector are exclusively other Governments, so HMG support is a fundamental component of successful export campaigns. Overseas customers often view procurement of UK equipment as part of a wider bilateral relationship - and the topic regularly occupies discussion time at the most senior bilateral meetings.

You would be joining the organisation as a Desk Officer, reporting to the Assistant Head of one of the regional teams. You would be working on one of the markets with the ‘America’s/Europe/Africa/Middle East/Central and South Asia geographical area. Working with Military and Security Advisers, the Whitehall defence and security community, UK industry and across our diplomatic networks, you will have a high degree of autonomy and personal responsibility to drive exports in your markets with significant long-term strategic importance to the UK.

This high-profile role offers a unique opportunity to simultaneously lead on strands of HMG’s trade and prosperity, defence and security and diplomatic agendas; providing the role-holder with the opportunity to develop broad networks and skills for career growth in any of these areas.

**Job description**:

- Build and maintain working relationships with counterparts across Whitehall, colleagues at Posts and within UK industry.
- Work with Posts, military advisers, and capability advisers to identify and communicate export opportunities to wider UK DSE and to UK industry.
- Lead campaign teams of a range of stakeholders to position the UK as partner of choice and support industry export campaigns.
- Plan and support inward visits from both markets to ensure a complementary balance of HMG and industry engagement, including at exhibitions in the UK.
- Work with wider UK DSE and Posts to plan the UK presence at exhibitions, in your allocated market, including support to UK Ministers and senior officials in attendance.
- Identify and advise on opportunities at all levels to enhance the UK relationships with your allocated market, concentrating on key organisations and stakeholders in relation to defence and security procurement.
- Develop and maintain a broader understanding of the region and interdependencies to support core work, as well as that of the wider team.

**Essential Criteria**
- Ability to explain a complicated situation in simple and concise terms to support decision making.
- Ability to work with a range of stakeholders, often with different priorities, to achieve the objective.
- Ability to consider how events and activity links together and assess the impact of them on each other.
- Desire to take opportunities to learn and develop.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Experience in or knowledge of the defence and/or security and cyber sectors.
- Experience in or knowledge of international trade.
- Experience in or knowledge of an international market.

**Personal Attributes & Skills**

They will be willing to offer their view even when it might prove unpopular.

Resilience to pressure is also important, as well the confidence to escalate risks to delivery.

The role will be based in London only.
