**Job summary**:
We are looking for an experienced communications professional with a media specialism to join our growing Defence, Security and Maritime exports communications team. This team sits within DBT's UK Defence and Security Exports (UKDSE) Directorate, which helps the UK defence, security, and civil maritime industries achieve export and inward investment success.

Working on a high profile and sometimes contentious area of HMG work, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across the directorate and DBT to:

- Manage and coordinate representation of UKDSE work in the media. This includes but is not limited to: building and maintaining quality relationships with key contacts in specialist and trade press; responding to media enquiries; arranging interviews and other opportunities for selected senior staff; placing op-eds; collating and pitching export success case studies.
- Contribute to and/or lead on communications planning/strategy around events and key export campaigns, as well as planning and delivering comms content such as social media posts, copy for brochures, and other ad hoc products.

This role offers a great opportunity to work across a range of projects and activities in an increasingly important area. Although media-related work is at least 50% of the role, it will suit someone familiar with or looking to strengthen their strategic communications and stakeholder engagement skills too.

DBT is an international department, and the position may include opportunities for overseas travel.

**Job description**:
You will be responsible for:

- Preparing press engagement plans to deliver UKDSE communications objectives, for key export campaigns and events. This includes liaising with industry comms specialists as needed, as well as working with DBT comms colleagues at British embassies and high commissions abroad to ensure a coherent, organised approach.
- Building up and managing UKDSE’s relationship with media contacts, responding to press queries in line with UKDSE and DBT objectives and media handling guidelines. This includes liaising with the central DBT communications teams to ensure coherence of approach and secure appropriate sign-offs.
- Delivering UKDSE engagement with the press in a variety of formats/via a range of channels and platforms, including ad hoc engagement and interviews with senior staff.
- Monitoring UK and specialist media to identify reporting on the UK defence sector and/or UKDSE work.
- Collating and developing case study material from successful export campaigns to pitch to relevant trade/specialist media, as well as to use for other internal and external comms products.
- Generating key message documents for events, campaigns and UKDSE ‘core’ communications products.
- Contributing as needed to wider communications planning/strategy around events and key export campaigns, as well as panning and delivering comms content such as social media posts, copy for brochures, and other ad hoc items.
- This role has no line management responsibilities, but you will be expected to be able to work effectively and in a collegiate way with colleagues at a range of levels, and across departments.

The role will be based in London.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

For this role, the Department will not consider sponsoring a visa or issuing a Certificate of Sponsorship. Please note we are unable to offer advice on any Visa and Immigration cases.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.
