The main purpose of the role is to promote the work of the CPS to the public through the media and to provide advice to CPS staff on media and presentational issues

The Press Office team cover a broad range of important issues, including terrorism, hate crime, cyber-crime and sexual offences.

The primary role of the team is to explain and promote the work of the CPS to the public through the media - and for this appointment, specifically in relation to rape and serious sexual offences, and violence against women and girls.

The postholder will deliver high-quality, proactive and reactive media handling and produce engaging content for an external audience, including press releases and social media content. The postholder will also be expected to contribute to effective communications campaigns that are integrated across our channels.

As an experienced communicator, they will contribute to building the profile of the CPS and driving up public understanding of the work we do. They will also work with partners across the criminal justice system to build a joined-up approach to communications activity.

**As a Press Officer your main responsibilities would be**:

- Produce quality, proactive and reactive media handling and ensure media enquiries are dealt with accurately and in a timely manner ensuring consistency in messaging and resilience under pressure.
- Contribute to communications campaigns by providing ideas and engaging content.
- Produce quality digital and social media content for use on CPS digital channels such as Twitter. Ensure written materials are produced to the required standard and quality, tailored to specific audiences, including press releases, statements, articles and fact sheets.
- Negotiate and handle media interviews with CPS spokespeople, including the DPP.
- Look for ways to promote the work of the CPS and research positive stories and successfully place them in the media.
- Spot trends in media and communications - including digital and social media - and identify how these can be best used to positive effect.
- Build productive working relationships with key journalists - including nationals and specialists - to foster better understanding of the work of the CPS.
- Provide written and verbal media handling advice to the Director and other senior CPS staff, including on high profile and sensitive issues.
- Support the network of Area Communication Managers (ACM) and through them, raise the profile of the CPS through the regional media.
- Manage involvement with documentaries, working with the film makers and CPS staff to ensure the finished programme is of benefit to the organisation’s reputation.
- Manage media events such as briefings and interviews, supporting CPS staff and ensuring the media reflect the CPS position.
- Effectively use the CPS’ digital channels, social media and campaigning to engage and involve the public, staff and criminal justice partners to reach new audiences and to build public understanding of our work.
- Further develop digital and social media skills to enhance press office handling of both proactive and reactive issues.
- Experience in the use of different communication methods, including digital resourced and highlight the benefits, including ensuring cost effectiveness.
- Ability to analyse and use a range of relevant, credible information from internal and external sources to support decisions.
- Ability to present strong recommendations in a timely manner outlining the consideration of other options, costs, benefits and risks.

**You’ll have relevant experience in**:

- Experience working in a press office environment
- Experience of writing compelling content
- An Understanding and interest in the strategic drivers for your areas of work and align activities to contribute to wider organisational priorities.
- Ability to Communicate in a straightforward, honest and engaging manner, choosing appropriate styles to maximise understanding and impact.
- Experience in the use of different communication methods, including digital resourced and highlight the benefits, including ensuring cost effectiveness.
- Ability to analyse and use a range of relevant, credible information from internal and external sources to support decisions.
