**Primary Location** UK-ENG-London

**Job** Communications

**Organisation** 342000 - STAKEHOLDER & MEDIA ENGAGEMENT

**Job Posting** 26-May-2023, 7:06:33 AM

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

The Bank of England is a diverse organisation. Each of its 4,000 plus people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

The Communications Directorate works in partnership with all other directorates across the Bank to drive internal and external communications.

One of our main aims is to improve understanding and trust in the work we all do.

To support our aims we:

- speak regularly to journalists and brief the press proactively and reactively
- build relationships with other external stakeholders eg Parliament and businesses
- use our website and social media to communicate directly with people
- have conversations with local communities though our outreach events
- provide educational resources and activities for families and schools

The Press Office is one team within the Communications Directorate and is led by the Chief Press Officer and Deputy Chief Press Officer, working alongside the Executive Director of Communications. The team is made up of Press Officers who each take responsibility for different areas of the Bank. The Press Office works closely with other teams in Communications and across the Bank to deliver public communications in a variety of styles and across a range of channels, in order to broaden the Bank’s outreach across the country.

**Job description**

Press Office is engaged with every major issue and event across the Bank. Not only do press officers handle calls from the media on a day to day basis but they will advise senior staff on all aspects of external communications. The work is a mix of policy discussion, engagement with senior staff and frontline operations. The work is often high profile and directly impacts on the reputation of the organisation.

This role is ideally suited to self-starters keen to work in an exciting environment on issues which affect the UK economy and which are at the heart of the Bank’s mission. Experience of the media or communications is valued, or demonstrable experience engaging with a range of external stakeholders - but equally important is being able to: understand and distil complex material into simple key messages; write well; anticipate sensitivities with good judgment; work effectively with colleagues at all levels and represent the Bank confidently and credibly.

The work will include:

- Developing reactive communications, in response to fast moving events.
- Involvement in the preparation and launch of Bank publications, speeches and other public events.
- Preparing media campaigns and approaches as well as arranging and leading media briefings and interviews.
- Engaging with senior members of staff across the Bank confidently.
- Presenting and defending your own views and providing advice on external engagements and press handling.
- Communicating in a simple and understandable manner to deliver key messages on potentially complex issues.
- Using sound judgement to make decisions, potentially under pressure.
- Dealing efficiently with enquiries from journalists and maintaining relationships internally and externally.
- Participating in Press Office’s out-of-hours rota service, including handling media calls and media monitoring duties.

**Role Requirements**

**Minimum (Essential) Criteria**
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to distil complex issues into succinct and accessible messages.
- Strong stakeholder management.
- Comfortable working under pressure and handling competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Sound judgement when making decisions.
- Ability to represent the Bank externally.
- Enthusiastic, highly motivated, and able to work without close oversight.

**Desirable Criteria**
- An understanding of the UK media landscape with an appreciation of how the Bank is perceived externally.
