**Job summary**:
CPS is delighted to advertise for a temporary Senior Press Officer position within the HQ Communications Directorate.

The Crown Prosecution Service Press Office team covers a broad range of important issues, including terrorism, hate crime, cyber-crime and sexual offences. This role will lead on a key priority -our Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) portfolio.

The CPS sits at the heart of the criminal justice system, working with partners to help keep the public safe. We perform a vitally important role, prosecuting criminal cases independently and without bias so that justice is served for victims, witnesses, defendants, and the public.

The Communications Directorate makes a vital contribution to this work. The more the public understand our role and trust the decisions we make, the more likely they are to support prosecutions as victims or witnesses.

We work flexibly within a hybrid-working model, and support a strong team culture -working collaboratively and supporting colleagues’ development. Working for the CPS is hugely rewarding, professionally stretching and gives great scope for individuals to make a real impact. You’ll be able to use the full range of your skills -and we’ll help you learn new ones. We can offer career development, both through our own training and development, and through the Government Communication Service.

**Please note, the following is considered essential experience for this role**:

**Please note, you will be assessed throughout the recruitment process on the Government Communications Services' Professional Competency Framework (SEO Grade), a link to this framework is here**:Government Communications Service’s professional competency
**Job description**:
The primary function of the Senior Press Officer role is to manage a team that explains and promotes the work of the CPS to the public through the media, and to provide advice to CPS staff on media and presentational issues.

The post holder will deliver high quality, proactive and reactive media handling and effective communications campaigns that are integrated across our channels.

An experienced communicator, they ensure that the team play a key role in building the profile of the CPS and driving up public understanding of the work we do. They also work with partners across the criminal justice system to build a joined-up approach to communications.

**Person specification**:

- Develop handling strategies to support policy and business objectives; ensure plans are fully integrated across communications channels.
- Identify opportunities to promote CPS priorities, and to ensure plans are in place to address any risks; ensure effective monitoring for coverage of issues to initiate timely rebuttal where appropriate.
- Ensure the team’s written materials are produced to a high quality and tailored to specific audiences, including press releases, statements, articles and fact sheets.
- Actively build and maintain a network of colleagues and contacts across the criminal justice system (CJS) to ensure a more joined-up approach to communications work.
- Provide written and verbal media handling advice to the Director and other senior CPS staff, including on high profile and sensitive issues. Negotiate media interviews with CPS staff, including the DPP.
- Identify team capability and development requirements in relation to the needs of the CPS and the changing media landscape; manage team resources to ensure it is skilled and equipped to meet those needs.
