**Job summary**:
We have several desk officer roles available in the Air, Strategic Command and Navy teams. DPAS (the Defence Portfolio Approvals Secretariat) play an integral role in how Defence spends its £40Bn+ budget, advising on high-profile investment programmes across a variety of capabilities - including, aircraft, ships and land vehicles, surveillance and communications systems, infrastructure, and transformation projects.

The role offers a significant amount of high-level exposure, and you’ll get vital experience of portfolio management, insight into financial processes and regular interaction with seniors, Ministers and the Treasury. You’re given significant autonomy but in a safe environment, where open challenge is welcomed and flexible working is encouraged. **Job description**:
The Approvals Secretariat acts as the central hub for how Defence manages its investment decisions. It provides a vital scrutiny and assurance service, managing the programmes through the approvals process and leading advice to seniors and Ministers. You're a key part of that.

You would:

- Manage a portfolio of projects, advising and liaising with range of stakeholders including project teams (who deliver), and sponsors (who provide the funds), to help them adhere to approvals policy whilst also providing independent advice and assessment on their business cases.
- Advise some of the most senior military and civilian officials in Defence to help them decide which programmes to invest the Defence budget in.
- Manage the relationship with the Treasury and Cabinet Office, ensuring your cases are managed swiftly through their approvals processes. Importantly, DPAS is one of only two areas within Defence with direct liaison authority with the Treasury, providing the opportunity to gain great - and largely unique - experience.

**Person specification**:
Prior experience of approvals or projects isn’t a must, nor is experience of Defence, but you’ll need to demonstrate an ability to write clearly and concisely, manage diverse stakeholder groups and oversee multiple projects in a coherent manner. Emotional intelligence is key - a willingness to ask questions, test assumptions and challenge in a constructive way is vital, as is a keen eye for detail.

There are multiple roles available - some require Security Clearance and some Developed Vetting (there are separate adverts for the two - this advert is for the DV posts). A willingness to undergo these processes prior to appointment is required if applicants don’t already hold the clearances.
