The post holder will act as operational leader for the department primarily on Gateway F - Gynaecology and Colposcopy at the NHS Treatment Centre. They will be required to;
Act as leader for the department regularly taking charge of the Department and ensuring that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered, are maintained at a high standard.

Be an effective leader and role model and will be expected to provide regular direct clinical care and use experience to support the implementation of both clinical and non-clinical governance.

Work flexibly as a member of the department team and in support of the Sister and Matron to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improved.

The post holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Main duties of the job

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients. Support the Sister & Matron to identify common issues affecting the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings.

In collaboration with the Sister & Matron, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes.

Act as a role model and mentor, working alongside other staff. Liaise with patients who visit the department, working collaboratively with the team and other multidisciplinary staff.

Work with the Sister to identify hazards relating to clinical and non-clinical risks and undertake risk assessments. Ensure junior staff also see this as important by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non-clinical governance within the department.

Support the Sister in completing appropriate risk assessments and develop action plans, in order to provide a safe environment for the delivery of high quality patient care.

Working for our organisation

The NHS Treatment Centre has various outpatient specialties, these are split across different gateways. This post is located within gateway F which is mainly Gynaecology and Colposcopy but will host other specialties from across the trust.

The team comprises of registered an unregistered staff. The gateway has a range of specialist clinics supporting the Family Health Directorate in the outpatient setting.

The Ambulatory care division has a vision to deliver the best care to our patients and develop our staff. We have a caring and compassionate leadership team who are visible and accessible.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
- Substantial experience at Band 5/6 within an acute setting.
- Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post basic students
- Evidence of ability to mentor
- Ability to manage the clinical area efficiently and effectively
- Evidence of leadership, management and time management skills

Desirable criteria
- Demonstrate an involvement in link nurse, or project work
- Audit or research within the clinical area
- Conflict management skills
- Ability to demonstrate negotiation skills
- Evidence of producing written policies or guidance

Training and Qulifications

Essential criteria
- Current level one NMC registration
- Experience of medical or surgical nursing.
- Completion of any local competency packages
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Formal leadership and management training/course

Desirable criteria
- Degree in health/nursing related studies or equivalent level of study
- Continuing professional development / reflective profile
- Research training/experience

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
- Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy
- Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
- Demonstrate basic IT skills
- Recognition of own level of competency and limitations and able to communicate these to appropriate staff

Desirable criteria
- Evidence of negotiation and influencing skills
- Demonstrate evidence of providing formal teaching sessions
- Demonstration of team working and ability to within a team.

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
- Demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care
