Job summary

Come and join us on our Neuroscience ward with a Spinal High Dependency Unit. Ward E40 is Children's Neurosciences Ward specialising in Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuro-oncology and Neuro-rehabilitation of Children and Young People. We also have 4 spinal high dependency beds We have a vacancy for full time deputy sisters but part time will be considered

Our team regularly works alongside the multidisciplinary team to ensure our patients receive a high level of holistic care and support to maximise their recovery. We welcome applications from registered children's nurses who have an NMC pin.

Main duties of the job

You must be able to lead a team, demonstrating excellent organisational and clinical skills.

You will be expected to co-ordinate care on the ward and deputise and support the Ward Manager.

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Manager, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings. In collaboration with the Ward Manager, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient process and the pathway of care. Support the Ward Manager in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust's requirements to improve practice. Being a point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives and staff acting as a resource for problems, needs and able to clearly present the patient's view to others. Support the Ward Manager in ensuring the development and on-going management of work rosters that provide appropriate safe staff post is essential to safe and effective running of the ward area as the role entails delivery of direct patient care as well as ensuring that consistently safe and effective care is delivered to patients and their families; this incorporates the provision of emotional support. In addition, this role provides leadership and management support to the Ward Sister and team to ensure safe, effective running of the ward on a daily basis.

Encouraging a culture of learning where students receive quality clinical placements supported by mentorship, teaching and support from registered nurses.Support of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring that best practice undertaken is shared with colleagues in the directorate, division and the Trust.Helping staff to use clinical information within the ward or department to help improve the quality of patient care. Encouraging staff to be involved in service changes and developments using processes defined within the directorate/ able to demonstrate clear lines of communication within a defined clinical area which result in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi professional team.Creating a culture where staff have appropriate authority over issues that contribute to the provision of essential care and enable them to secure and achieve the highest quality standards.

Person Specification

Training & Qualification

Essential

Current level one NMC registration RN (Child) or RSCN Proven Management Experience Degree or working towards Completed IV and CVL competency packages

Desirable

Continuing professional development/reflective profile Formal leadership and management training Research training/experience Have a suitable teaching and assessing qualification Possession of a mentoring course

Communication and Relationship

Essential

Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills Demonstrate Basic IT Skills Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents Recognition of own level of competence and limitations and able to communicate these to all members of the MDT Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication

Desirable

Experience

Recent or current experience within the speciality Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post basis students Evidence of ability to mentor Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relative/carers and staff. Caring for children with life limiting conditions

Desirable

Demonstrate an involvement in link nurse, or project work Audit or research within the clinical area Providing staff with feedback on their individual performance and use of the knowledge and skills framework
