The role involves providing phlebotomy care, chaperoning during scans, undertaking audits, maintaining and order stock amongst other clinical duties. - To assist the ultrasound sonographers with screening in the 1st trimester pregnancy scan by taking blood for the combined screening tests
- To provide a chaperone service for women undergoing intimate scans
- Maintaining, monitoring and ordering of clinical stock
- Completing of audits
- Cleaning and general care of the ultrasound department
- Transferring women from the scan department to the gynaecology ward where appropriate
- Completing e-learning to support continuous practice development

The role of the Maternity Support Worker is highly valued within the Trust. There is a clear career pathway for those wishing to develop beyond that of a Foundation Maternity Support Worker. Following 12 months service opportunities will be available to progress into a Senior Maternity Support Worker role. This will be dependent upon completion of the necessary competencies to undertake this more senior role.

As a member of the maternity team, you will support and closely work with registered midwives and sonographers to deliver a high standard of care to women in a caring and safe environment. To work as part of the wider ward team in developing and maintaining services provided to women and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the ward/clinical area. To maintain the dignity and privacy of all women and respect their right to confidentiality.

To complete and maintain on an ongoing basis a generic and specific portfolio of clinical competencies and/or the Care Certificate as required. To review progress with line manager at regular intervals and
through the appraisal process. Understand own level of responsibility, scope of practice and accountability in relation to registered staff. All policies must also be adhered to at all times.

All new in role, Nursing Assistants, Theatre Support Workers, Maternity Support Workers and Assistant Practitioners will be expected to achieve the Care Certificate within the first 12 weeks of employment if they have not already done so through previous employment. The Care Certificate
consists of 15 standards that set out explicit learning outcomes, competences and standards of behaviour that are expected of a Nursing Assistant. The Oxford University Hospitals Support Worker Academy team deliver an enhanced and extended induction programme, this to facilitate
the training and education required to maintain quality assurance, support and guidance to ensure timely completion and compliance.
