We are looking for caring, conscientious and motivated people to work as Maternity Support Workers in different clinical areas within the Women’s Centre. Full and part time hours available (minimum of 23hours per week)

To undertake a range of delegated and specific clinical skills for women that demonstrate a level of competency /technical expertise documented in the plan of care.

To assist women with their personal care needs, maintaining privacy and dignity.

To keep staff/co-ordinator fully informed of the woman’s or infant’s condition and to seek advice and
support of a registered practitioner when indicated.

Following appropriate assessment of competence, accurately record observations using the Maternity
Early Obstetric Warning Chart (MEOWS) and Newborn Early Warning Score (NEWS) and escalate any
concerns appropriately by reporting to the registered midwife immediately.

Obtain consent and take capillary blood samples from babies when asked to by the registered midwife
e.g. newborn blood spot, serum bilirubin level, blood glucose.

Provide evidence based advice and support in relation to Infant Feeding and with support from the
midwife be able to put a feeding plan in place if necessary.

Undertake transfers and escort duties between departments as appropriate.

Respond swiftly to individuals who require immediate assistance.

Undertake equipment checks and update records and restock items as required.

Assist with the collection of specimens as requested such as mid-stream urine, stool, sputum, urine
analysis and MRSA, ensuring accurate labelling and transportation as per Trust policy and in
accordance with the training provided.

**Job Summary**:
As a member of the maternity team you will support and closely work with registered midwives to deliver a
high standard of care to women in a caring and safe environment. To work as part of the wider ward team in
developing and maintaining services provided to women and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth
running of the ward/clinical area. To maintain the dignity and privacy of all women and respect their right to
confidentiality.

To complete and maintain on an ongoing basis a generic and specific portfolio of clinical competencies
and/or the Care Certificate as required. To review progress with line manager at regular intervals and
through the appraisal process. Understand own level of responsibility, scope of practice and accountability
in relation to registered staff. All policies must also be adhered to at all times.

All new in role, Nursing Assistants, Theatre Support Workers, Maternity Support Workers and
Assistant Practitioners will be expected to achieve the Care Certificate within the first 12 weeks of
employment if they have not already done so through previous employment. The Care Certificate
consists of 15 standards that set out explicit learning outcomes, competences and standards of
behaviour that are expected of a Nursing Assistant.

The Oxford University Hospitals Support Worker Academy team deliver an enhanced and extended induction programme, this to facilitate
the training and education required to maintain quality assurance, support and guidance to ensure
timely completion and compliance.

Communication, Build partnerships and therapeutic relationships through safe, effective and non-discriminatory
communication, taking account of differences, capability and needs of individuals through effective
verbal and non-verbal communication.

Communicate effectively with women and their families, recognising there may be a need to utilise
