Are you passionate about using your skills to improve patient safety? Do you have the skills to strengthen improved engagement and involvement of our trainee workforce within our safety improvement priorities? We are looking to appoint a safety improvement fellow to join the trusts safety improvement team to provide support to the safety improvement programme, the aim of which is to inspire continuous and sustainable improvements in patient safety to optimise healthcare outcomes for our patients.

The priorities for the quality and safety improvement programme for this year are:

- Implementation of the NHS patient safety strategy, in particular the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF);
- Delivery of the Trust’s safety improvement priority workstreams which are focused on our key areas of risk e.g. procedural safety, IP&C practice, End of Life care, blood transfusion.

This one-year fellowship is an excellent opportunity for a doctor in training who is interested in developing their leadership portfolio, to significantly develop their management skills and understanding of the patient safety needs of a large, complex Trust.

Applicants must be registered with General Medical Council with a licence to practise and eligiblefor entry to ST3 level training

**The role will involve**:

- Providing a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement, and morale.
- Leading on work to support the improved understanding of and involvement in the Trust’s safety improvement programme for the wider trainee workforce.
- Leading on specific improvement projects to improve patient safety.
- Developing and maintaining up-to-date project documentation, and producing periodic progress reports.
- Attending and presenting their work at key trust meetings, including the Executive Management Board (Quality).

The postholder will also attend departmental and trust wide management meetings to gain an understanding of management and the wider social, political and economic influence health care delivery.

The postholder will be responsible creating project plans and documentation ensuring that operational handover to colleagues in the Office of the Medical Director is successfully achieved at the end of the fellowship.

This fellowship is an excellent opportunity for a doctor in training who is interested in developing their leadership portfolio, to significantly develop their management skills and understanding of the patient safety needs of a large, complex Trust.

The postholder will work across all sites but will be based for administrative purposes at the St Mary’s Hospital site. The role is office based, 40hrs, 5 days per week.

Project development
- Liaise with the Safety Improvement team to agree scoping, planning and delivery of projects;
- Identify and engage stakeholders to create project teams and pilot cohorts;
- Develop and maintain effective communications within and between teams, organising and participating in meetings as appropriate;
- Manage project teams to deliver outcomes to time and budget, contributing to those outcomes where appropriate;
- Developing and maintaining up-to-date project documentation, and producing periodic progress reports
- Produce upscaling/roll-out plans after evaluation of pilot trials.

Research

The postholder will be encouraged to develop research projects assessing the performance of the different interventions. The postholder will be supported to generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations and publications in medical and educational journals.

Professional development

This post will provide opportunity for significant development of project management and leadership skills.
