Interface Geriatrics Research Registrars or Senior House Officers (SHOs)

This post offers the opportunity for a 12-month clinical academic fellowship based at St Pancras Hospital and the UCL Institute for Health Informatics (IHI), with the aim of providing a foundation for translational research for older people.

Structured as a 50:50 role, the fellowship will offer academic exposure to epidemiology, data science, pathophysiology and health services research. At the same time, fellows will maintain clinical practice across an innovative suite of interface geriatric services that bridge primary and secondary care, including UCLH front door frailty liaison, St Pancras inpatient rehabilitation, pre-hospital London Ambulance Service triage and Camden community rapid response and virtual ward.

Further Information & Arrangements to visit

Dr Alex Tsui - Academic Geriatrician, Camden Community Services

If new to data science, fellows will be taught basic Python and Stata. Prof. Daniel Davis and Dr. Alex Tsui will offer individual mentorship on data science using robust statistical methods and supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches.

Fellows will be mentored to write manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, anticipating at least one first-author publication while in post.

Clinically, fellows will rotate amongst our interface services: St Pancras inpatient rehabilitation ward, Silver Triage paramedic advice service, Camden virtual ward, including UCLH acute hospital in-reach and urgent care response. There are ample quality improvement and audit opportunities. Fellows interested in medical education will be encouraged to develop the “St Pancras Masterclass” series, an innovation to tackle the most challenging questions in geriatric medicine with a view of producing a free-to-use online channel through expert interviews and accompanying material.

CNWL is recognised locally, nationally and internationally for providing high quality, innovative healthcare. Our track record in recruiting only the best people is well known, and our experts are frequently called upon to contribute to national health strategy and policy, and many models of our care have been adapted for use in other countries.

**The Trust provides the following clinical services**:
A wide range of community health services, including adult and child physical care services in Camden, Hillingdon, Milton Keynes and Ealing.

A comprehensive range of mental health services community and inpatients for adults, children and adolescents from early intervention and psychological therapies to inpatient treatment or long-term rehabilitation care. This includes specialist services for Addictions, Eating Disorders and Learning Disability

Mental health, addictions and primary health care services in many HM Prisons and Young Offender Institutions in London, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire.

Sexual and reproductive health services, including walk-in services, in central London and Hillingdon.

We hold grants from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and our primary research focus is on characterising acute illness in the context of frailty, specifically delirium and its longitudinal outcomes. However, we are equally flexible in tailoring plans to suit the interests of the successful applicant.

The Registrars and Junior Trainees rotate between St Pancras Hospital and CNWL interface services, spending one month per rotation on Camden virtual ward, silver triage and St Pancras rehabilitation. At any one time there are two registrars and two junior trainees based at SPRU.

The post-holders will form part of the medical team and be allocated a clinical supervisor in Geriatric Medicine. At the start of post all trainees will meet their clinical supervisor to discuss the timetable for their placement. Your working pattern will be 5 days per week, rotating through various aspects of the service to suit your learning needs. Your clinical supervisor will develop a weekly timetable with you. Trainees are expected to participate in the medical care of patients on the unit and in the community. Half of the week will be protected for academic activity, which might include education, quality improvement, research or leadership development.

This arrangement offers a broad range of experience of general and geriatric medicine, managing long-term conditions and rehabilitation. There are no out-of-hours duty at St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit.

The post-holder are expected to participate in the education and training of undergraduate doctors, audit and quality improvement activities. There is a very active medical education department in the Trust which organises teaching across the organisation and facilitates relevant training.
