Activity and Engagement Officer

Sheffield, United Kingdom Sheffield City Council Full time

Job description

Sheffield is an amazing city with a proud heritage and a prosperous future. We’re a city on the up, alive with activity and energy and bursting with talent. We want to create the right environment for everyone to thrive with great neighbourhoods where communities have healthier lives in our Outdoor City. We’re passionate about responding to the nature and climate and emergencies and are committed to ensuring our green spaces support nature recovery.

The Species Survival Fund has been launched to help halt and reverse the decline in species abundance by preserving vital habitats through a select number of projects around the country.

Sheffield City Council are leading one of the successful projects, in the Southeast of Sheffield, ‘Species Stacking the Shire Brook Valley’, due to its mosaic of habitats and heritage, benefitting wildlife and people.

The project will be delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Woodhouse and District Community Forum and the South Yorkshire Sustainability Centre and working with a range of local volunteers, community groups and stakeholders.

We are recruiting an activity and engagement officer as a vital member of the project delivery team to enable us to deliver the activity programme as part of the project.

The activity programme celebrates everything that makes the landscape around the Shire Brook Valley special, encouraging more people from a wider range of communities to connect with its stories, wildlife, and history. We are looking for a hands-on communicator to help old and new audiences to discover more about nature, to help us build on the existing sense of place and to provide for a legacy of activity and engagement beyond the lifetime of the project.

Can you combine your passion for natural heritage, partnership working, successful event delivery, evaluation, and legacy building experience to help us deliver our activity programme? Would you like to be part of a new and enthusiastic team formed specifically for this project? If that sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you.

Location - Norfolk Park and various sites across the city

Please note: This vacancy is funded by the Government's Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
