The Crick is a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. Dedicated to research excellence, the Crick has the scale, vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions that underpin our understanding of human health and disease.
Conducting world-class biomedical research safely, sustainably and successfully in central London is a significant undertaking. The scale and complexity of the science requires a highly professional and effective Health and Safety team.
The Deputy Health and Safety Manager (DHSM) will assist the SHSM on tasks related to managing the Health and Safety Advisory team, to ensure it supports cutting edge science by monitoring and advising on health, safety and regulatory compliance issues, specifically working with Crick members and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities of our Deputy Health and Safety Manager:
Assist the SHSM to manage the Health and Safety Advisory Team, mentoring and setting work priorities and objectives, under the advisement of the SHSM.
Lead, in the absence of the SHSM, the advisory function in support of the achievement of best practice in health and safety.
Work with the Advisory Team to provide professional, efficient and effective support to science Group Leaders, Laboratory Research Scientists, Heads of Science Technology Platforms, the Service Delivery Team and other operational services.
Working closely with the SHSM to devise and deliver the H&S strategy, by identifying, planning, implementing policies and procedures as delivered by the H&S Advisory Team.
Act as subject matter expert, advising the Institute of best practice H&S for managing laboratory hazards.
Liaise with University Partners in matters of Health and Safety, sharing best practice and lessons learnt.
Champion the improvement of safety, health and wellbeing across the Crick.
Support the wider H&S team with communication and consultation on health and safety. Run, or assist with, campaigns and initiatives for the positive promotion of health, safety and wellbeing as required.
Skills and experience we are looking for in our Deputy Health and Safety Manager:
Level 5 Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification with experience.
Significant work experience in a similar Health and Safety role.
Experience in Laboratory hazards, associated controls and working practices including chemical, biological or radiation safety.
Experience of leading health and safety either through projects or team management.
Knowledge of current health and safety legislation as it applies to a science-based environment.
