Uxbridge, United Kingdom London Borough of Hillingdon Full time

About us

At Hillingdon we’re proud of our commitment of ‘Putting our residents first’, ensuring they’re at the heart of everything we do We want to attract talented individuals like yourself who share our aspirations for the borough and can support us to deliver exceptional services for Hillingdon.

With an ambitious strategy we pride ourselves on delivering services that improve the lives of all our residents, businesses, and partners. Embarking on a journey of continuous improvement, we’ve set an agenda to ensure the provision of; safer communities, a thriving local economy, a greener more sustainable environment, whilst increasing our digital capabilities.

Working at London’s second largest borough can be tough, particularly with government reforms, budget restrictions, and political attention – but it’s enough to keep us busy and ensures no two days are the same

What does a Planning Apprentice do at Hillingdon?

The Planning Apprenticeship provides a fantastic opportunity for capable and ambitious individuals to gain a Spatial Planning MSc degree from University College London and the status of being a Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI), all whilst gaining invaluable on the job experience within the Council’s Planning Service. This will provide successful candidates with the foundation for a career in either Development Management or Planning Enforcement. Previous Apprentices have successfully moved on to more senior positions within the Planning Service.

Under the successful guidance and support of a team of friendly and experienced planners and enforcement officers, you will carry out a varied and interesting fixed term role, gaining direct experience in the fields of both Development Management and Planning Enforcement. As part of your Development Management experience, you will learn how to validate and determine a diverse portfolio of planning applications, and also gain experience in appeal work and post-decision matters such as discharge of conditions. In Planning Enforcement, you will learn how to investigate and progress a case-load of Planning Enforcement cases.

The Spatial Planning degree studied as part of the Apprenticeship is delivered through individual and group project work, skills-based practical and IT work, lectures, field-trips, tutorials and seminars. Assessment is through individual and group work, essays, examination, skills-based practical work, and a dissertation.

About you

Candidates will need to meet the eligibility criteria for the degree course and should possess a level 2 award (e.g. GCSE graded A*-C in English and in Mathematics), and an upper second-class or first class undergraduate degree from a UK university or overseas qualification of equal standing (any subject acceptable).

Candidates must have the desire to pursue a career in planning / planning enforcement and the willingness to study towards chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

Ideal candidates will be able to work flexibly to meet the requirements of the Planning Service. They will have excellent communication and ICT skills, and be able to prioritise, think laterally and problem solve. An understanding of the statutory planning process in Local Authority settings would be an advantage but is not essential.

You must be available to start in September 2024.

You will be required to carry out site inspections as part of the role, therefore you must have a full UK driving licence (or equivalent) and use of your own car.

For more information about this exciting opportunity, please contact Eoin Concannon (Area Planning Team Leader - North) at .

Interviews are proposed to be held w/c 12th August 2024.
