Job summary

His Majesty�s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNBP) has been an integral part of the city since 1194. It is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface ships, including the new aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, the formidable Type 45 destroyers, Type 23 frigates and mine countermeasures and fishery protection squadrons.�

The base is a major employer and provides lodging facilities to RN personnel serving at the base and in Portsmouth based ships.

HMNBP is one of three naval bases providing enabling support as part of the nation�s defence strategy. In doing so, HMNBP seeks to improve through science and technology to strengthen its security and defence at home and overseas. This requires continuous improvements in building capacity, capability, and resilience through its people. It is the home base for assigned ships and ship�s companies preparing for operations. A key component of achieving this support is the ability to deliver the full range of increasingly sophisticated engineering support services. Job description

Naval Base Commander Portsmouth (NBC(P)) provides an armoury facility to support large lodger units at readiness and individual personnel to deploy into conflict areas with individual personal weapon systems. This facility also supports front line units conducting continuation training whilst alongside in HMNBP. This role is operate and manage the armoury in HMS NELSON conducting appropriate maintenance routines of all small arms to ensure 85% availability across all weapon outfits; to manage the correct issue and receipt of all weapons and ancillaries (including timely preparation, delivery and collection of assets to and from the airhead); to remain up to date on weapons maintenance policy and procedure such that routine inspections and assurance visits by both Navy Command and Small Arms School Corps are successful and assure Command; to monitor AinU levels; to compile timely and accurate assessments of equipment; to manage and control all weapon outfits, including Specialist Tools and Testing Equipment (STTE); and to maintain and prepare 3lb saluting platforms at 6 hours notice to fire in direct support of national events as a Primary Saluting Station. This last element of the role means that a driving licence is desirable to allow for short notice recall to site to conduct weapon preps for firing.

Person specification

This post requires an experienced small arms maintainer preferably with a background specialism in maintaining British Armed Forces personal weapon systems (ideally holding a RN Advanced Small Arms Maintainer, Armourer 2 or Service equivalent qualification). You will ideally have a history of employment with either the British Army Small Arms School Corps or as a Royal Navy Weapons Engineer. Although some specialist training can be provided (including 3lb Saluting Gun maintenance), knowledge of policy and process in maintenance and provision of small arms, including recording of equipment transactions between units and knowledge of civilian firearms control regulations is highly desirable. You will be comfortable working alone and equally at ease with leading personnel whether additional workforce is provided in the armoury or you are required to direct others in respect of rules and regulations which must be followed. You will be comfortable engaging with personnel of all ranks without any form of prejudice or judgement. You will have sufficient capacity and ability in operating Microsoft products, including Sharepoint, Teams, and Office, along with capacity to understand other bespoke IT solutions including MyHR and JAMES.
