Job summary

His Majesty's (HM) Naval Base Devonport has evolved into the largest base of its kind in Western Europe and is today a key strategic defence asset as a main operating and support base for the Royal Navy (RN). In doing so, supporting a varied customer base including RN and foreign military vessels, submarines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and commercial vessels, also working closely with other MoD stakeholders and our main industry partners. We are looking to recruit a dedicated and experienced professional to embark the admiralty pilot training scheme leading to becoming a fully qualified admiralty pilot who will provide subject matter advice and support to commanding officers and captains on behalf of the King�s Harbour Master (KHM).

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.�

Job description

Admiralty pilots are part of the KHM organization and are employed to enable KHM to discharge his statutory duties to ensure the safe movement of vessels within the Dockyard Port of Plymouth. Admiralty pilots are accountable to the KHM through the Chief Admiralty Pilot (CAP) for the conduct of their duties.�

The primary role of an Admiralty Pilot is to provide pilotage support to commanding officers of designated ships within the Dockyard Port of Plymouth in accordance with approved procedures, statutory instruments and National Occupational Standards for Marine Pilots. This service will range from�

Providing advice to commanding officers, captains and bridge teams of His Majesty�s Ships to taking full conduct of auxiliary and commercial vessels.To assume full responsibility for the safe movement of any vessels being moved without �own ships power� utilising tugs and assets.Advise commanding officers and Masters of vessels requiring pilotage information relevant to the Dockyard Port of Plymouth.�

Additional information

As an admiralty pilot (trainee) you will be required to follow and successfully complete the admiralty pilot training scheme. This will require you to observe and conduct acts of pilotage with a qualified admiralty pilot. You will also undertake tug familiarisation training. During the training period you will be required to record training and experiences. You will also be expected to successfully complete two examinations before gaining your �limited ships� pilot licence and a further practical examination before achieving your �all ships� pilot licence.�

On successful completion of the training scheme, you will be expected to work within a roster system which provides pilotage support 24/7 365 days a year to a maximum of 2400 hours per annum. This will include periods of being �on call� during which time you will be required to respond within 1 hour.�

To maintain a high standard of competence in all aspects of their duties admiralty pilots are required to undertake continuous professional development and MOD mandatory training.�

Carry out additional tasks under the instruction of CAP such as port familiarisation runs for Commanding officers and bridge teams, attend meetings and other general pilotage related tasks.�

You will also be required to qualify as a compass adjuster and undertake compass adjustments for MOD vessels.�

You will be required to undertake short term detached duties for training courses�

Admiralty pilot positions are a �mobile grade��

Person specification

Applicants will hold either:

STCW ll/2 command qualification or RN equivalent (CQ2) together with either command or senior deck officer experience.

Or have been recently employed and authorised as a pilot within another pilotage authority (not PEC)

All applicants will hold an ENG1 medical certificate

Licences
