JOB DESCRIPTION

This apprenticeship offers a key route into a rewarding career in Regulatory Services at Midlothian Council. In partnership with Edinburgh College, we will equip you with the skills and experience needed to succeed in the SVQ Level 7 Modern Apprenticeship in Regulatory Services.

During the apprenticeship you will contribute to the duties of the Protective Services function to protect the health and wellbeing of people living and working in Midlothian.

Working amongst our Regulatory Protective Service teams: Business Regulation (food safety & occupational health and safety), Public Health & Environmental Protection and Trading Standards, you will develop skills and knowledge to become an Authorised Enforcement Officer and enable you to thereafter pursue your career in a busy and challenging regulatory environment.

You will contribute to a variety of work areas including environmental crime, air quality, contaminated land, licensing, public health, dog control, pest control, food safety, health and safety, service request investigation, test transactions and targeted projects.

Work location

You will undertake day release with Edinburgh College and for the remainder of your time will be based at Midlothian Council Fairfield House office in Dalkeith. During your apprenticeship you will work in a range of environments and sites across Midlothian during inspection, investigation, sampling etc.

KNOWLEDGE

Requirements

Essential

You will need a minimum of English plus 3 other National 5 level qualifications at grade A-C.

In accordance with Government guidelines, you will need to be aged at the point of starting the apprenticeship) or if you are disabled or care experienced you will need to be aged at the point of starting the apprenticeship).

Desirable

It is desirable that you have Higher English and Maths, and a science subject.

During the selection process we will look for the applicant to demonstrate some important key strengths; ambition, communication, adaptability, ownership, pro-activeness and a willingness to learn.

A driving licence and access to a vehicle is advantageous.

Previous experience is not essential.

Weeks per year: 52

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £23,650.06 per annum.

Compliance with the mandatory Cabinet Office PSN (Public Sector Network) Code of Connection requires the Council to meet a baseline personal security standard. This requires completion of a disclosure check for all employees who can access official information. The fee for this PSN Disclosure check will be met by you.
