Cardiff, Cardiff, United Kingdom Public Health Wales Full time

The Screening Division of Public Health Wales is recruiting to the role of Principal Public Health Data Scientist. This is an exciting role in which the post-holder will apply data science and analytical tools, techniques and methods to support research and service evaluation within the division to improve population-screening-related outcomes.

The Screening Division delivers seven national population-based screening programmes in Wales (bowel cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, abdominal aortic aneurysm, diabetic eye, newborn hearing, and newborn bloodspot) and manages the Antenatal Screening Wales clinical network. It is also currently scoping the delivery of a targeted lung cancer screening programme. As a result, the post-holder could work across several different health areas.

The Principle Public Health Data Scientist will have advanced SQL server and programming skills as well as advanced R or Python skills. These will be used to work with our existing datasets, create linkages to new sources of data, and undertake analysis to develop insights into screening. In addition, the post-holder will be the initial point of contact for screening research and evaluation support and advice for staff and external partners.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will have a senior role in leading research and service evaluation within the screening division. Using strong data science skills and passion for innovation and improvement to lead, scope, shape and deliver various data science and analytical screening research and service evaluation projects with impact. This may include:

  • Using data analysis and techniques and predictive analytics to develop and communicate insights into screening.
  • Exploring and linking to alternative data sources to create public health insights.
  • Preparing datasets for analysis within Public Health Wales or by external partners.
  • Ensuring divisional adherence to appropriate research and evaluation governance and ethics standards.
  • Developing data visualisations
  • Line managing a public health researcher in the division.
  • Training staff, supervising or mentoring junior staff, and demonstrating specific tasks or work as required of others.
  • Acting as the initial point of screening research and service evaluation support and advice for Public Health Wales staff and external partners, including screening data availability, access/transfer, quality, analysis, and interpretation.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
