We work with outstanding creative talent who are responsible for platform-defining shows from Strictly Come Dancing to Bluey, Prehistoric Planet to Planet Earth III.

The range and quality of our content is unsurpassed, creating critical and commercial successes and global phenomena.

From BAFTAs to RTS Awards, BBC Studios is Britain's most awarded production company and the only producer with three of the top ten shows on IMDB; we're the home of , the widest-read English language news website in the world; and the UK's largest distributor of British content.

We are looking for an experienced researcher to lead our central insights team at BBC Studios. BBC Studios is the global, commercial arm of the BBC and our central research team is responsible for providing research and insight to colleagues across the business e.g. to teams focused on brands, consumer products, social media, new business, gaming, marketing, production and sales, among others.

THE ROLE

The core responsibility of this role is to deliver relevant consumer and brand insight to these teams. This will be achieved by doing research and analysing data to understand consumer needs, attitudes and behaviours in the UK and globally, then generating and communicating these insights in actionable ways. The role must build strong relationships with decision-makers and provide inspiration to content makers. This means juggling the demands and understanding the needs of different teams, and understanding what research and data analysis we can use to support their work.

This is a manager-level role that has a relatively high level of autonomy in a relatively new team. We are looking for someone experienced in research with an entrepreneurial spirit who will be able to plan and deliver research projects without close supervision. The job requires someone prepared to do data analysis and generate insight themselves, as well as supporting their team and commissioning and managing agencies to do the same.

The role sits within our wider data and insight team, which is a large and rapidly growing function within the business. We are looking for someone who will take an interest in the work and reputation of the wider team, and contribute towards it by acting as a leader within insight and being a trusted expert in consumer insight.

The role is responsible for a small team of researchers and the successful candidate will be keen and confident in how they plan to grow and develop those individuals. We have a collaborative and friendly working culture and we are looking for someone to value and contribute to that.

The role reports into the Head of Audience Planning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Be a source of expertise about consumer and brand insight, acting as a go-to expert for colleagues working across BBC Studios.
  • Derive actionable insights that will support BBC Studios commercially, through undertaking research and data analysis and overseeing a team and agencies to do the same.
  • Create compelling ways to communicate insights and confidently deliver them, including through meetings, presentations, email and webinars.
  • Be a supportive and strong team manager, developing the team, earning their trust and respect, and making BBC Studios a great place to work.
  • Develop strong relationships with decision-makers, researchers and data analysts across the BBC, becoming a trusted partner and ensuring collaborative, efficient working practices.
  • Oversee the central research budget and contracts, keeping track of progress and, alongside the Head of Planning, allocated budget towards research goals.
  • Proactively build relationships and collaborate with data teams, taking a lead in ensuring that our work dovetails and delivers fresh insights.
  • Managing research agency work including writing briefs and ensuring delivery of the work to high standards and within budget to meet BBC Studios' aims.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
  • Extensive experience in market research - qualitative and quantitative. Brand research experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • A strong track record of supporting leaders to understand and action insight.
  • Expertise in data analysis. Experience of Barb/TechEdge or other global TV rating software would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Proficient at distilling insights and implications from data and research.
  • A confident and experienced storyteller - written and verbal.
  • Experience of managing a team is a plus but not essential.
Personal Attributes
  • Proactive - a confident self-starter.
  • Analytical and strategic - a natural at sifting through complexity to identify what matters to the business.
  • Takes responsibility and has pride in their work and the quality of outputs.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and delivering on time.
  • Cares about the wellbeing and development of their team.
  • Creative - able to develop new and interesting ways of doing things.
  • Interested in our business and curious to learn about the diverse roles of our colleagues we work to support.
  • Highly collaborative.
