John Murray Press have an exciting opportunity for a creative and talented deputy art director to join our design team on a maternity cover fixed term 12 month contract.
We publish books of excellence and lasting value written by authors with passion and expertise. Established in 1768 and with a rich and illustrious history, we are the oldest imprint in the business and oldest surviving trade list in British publishing.

As Deputy Art Director work closely with the wider publishing team to deliver outstanding covers for a fantastic range of imprints, with a particular focus on non-fiction across our trade and specialist lists.
Reporting into the Creative & Marketing Director, the candidate will be a champion of industry-leading design and innovation, bringing proven talent to the list. They will have responsibility for planning, directing, and leading a team of designers, commissioning freelancers, managing the workflow of the team and the design budget, chairing the cover meeting, and developing appropriately targeted commercially forward-thinking designs that meet business needs.
Responsibilities
Overseeing the creation of over 190+ covers (internal and freelanced) and forward planning for the following key imprints: Basic Books, JM One, JM Learning, Hodder Faith, JM Business and Sheldon Press, ensuring commercially forward-thinking designs meet business needsTo be responsible for appropriate and distinctive designs in the context of market and editorial imperatives. To be personally responsible for designing around 40 covers per yearWorking with senior colleagues to develop imprint and author brand identitiesManaging and developing approximately 1-2 internal designersDeveloping 1 internal artworker, working closely with their line manager the Studio ManagerTo work collaboratively with the Creative & Marketing Director and the Art Director to ensure the team meets its full potentialNegotiating with and commissioning illustrators, either directly or via agents and delivering clear commercial briefs and art direction for all areas of the marketTo chair John Murray's fortnightly Cover Meeting with authority, clarity, and openness Knowledge, skills and experienceSignificant Design Management experience in publishing or relevant experience in a design environmentExperienced Mac user, fluent with relevant software, e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, IllustratorExcellent team management experience. Supervising, managing and developing designers and freelancersExpert knowledge of target market and industry, as well as visual design in general in order to help develop new commercial conceptsExperience of and an ongoing interest in specialist non-fiction categories including: business, science, economics, psychology, MBS, mental and physical health, adult learning and the Christian market.Creative and visually innovative designerExcellent communication and presentation skills – being able to present design concepts, approaches and work in progress to various internal and external stakeholders. You will also be confident chairing cover meetings and expertly guiding the conversationStrong financial understanding and budget management skillsAdaptable, organised, collaborative and an excellent problem-solverYou'll be full of creative energy and thrive on working with an engaged, passionate, and close-knit team.You'll be adept at building strong working relationships with your peers and other departments, and you will be someone with outstanding leadership skills who strives for excellence.
