Deputy Director, World Trade Organization and Multilateral in the Global Trade

This is a unique Deputy Director role at the heart of the UK's trade policy at a challenging yet fascinating time for the global trading system.

You will be responsible for the UK's overall policy and positioning at the WTO, the G7, G20 and OECD and ensuring that the UK has a coherent strategy for using these fora to deliver on HMG's wider economic, foreign and development objectives, as well as representing the UK in important fora such as the G7 and G20.


You will lead 3 G6 led teams covering:
strategy and policy, international engagement and programme delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Translating HMG objectives and equities and shifts and trends in the global context into a coherent and credible strategy and position for the UK in the global trading system
  • Ensuring developments in the global trading system as well as our obligations are well understood by UK policy makers and Ministers
  • Driving delivery of priorities and work across a wide range of teams across DBT and Whitehall, managing risks, interdependences and trade-offs
  • Leading on the development of cross-cutting multilateral trade policy, including UK thinking for long-term reform of the global trading system and WTO
  • Overseeing the delivery of well organised Ministerial visits in support of UK objectives in particular attendance at G7, G20, OECD and WTO meetings and conferences
  • Supporting Ministers in their engagement with counterparts on multilateral trade policy matters and in key meetings at the WTO, G7, G20 and OECD
  • Working hand-in-glove with UKMIS Geneva to oversee the UK's participation in all aspects of, and membership of the WTO, including holding the budget for the UK's financial contribution to the WTO
  • Acting as UK Chief Negotiator for WTO accessions
  • Providing inspiring and empowering leadership to a team of around 30 FTE, supporting them to develop expertise and navigate a complex policy landscape
  • Building strong relationships and coalitions with international counterparts to help deliver UK objectives, including representing the UK in the G7 and G20 Trade Tracks
