Position Overview
This position is integral to the Trade Disputes team, which operates under the Global Trade and Delivery directorate within the Economic Security and Trade Relations Directorate General. A primary focus of this directorate is to uphold and promote the rules-based international trade framework while safeguarding the UK's industrial, economic, and geopolitical interests.

Trade disputes significantly impact the UK economy, influencing a wide range of domestic and international trade interests. Our team has achieved notable successes, including resolving disputes with the EU and the US regarding tariffs and long-standing trade issues in the aviation sector.
The agenda is both challenging and dynamic, encompassing efforts to shape the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules and engage in various trade partnerships where the UK has strategic interests. We are seeking to appoint a leader for the branch responsible for managing all WTO and Free Trade Agreement (FTA) disputes involving the UK.
This role is ideal for individuals capable of handling a demanding and high-profile portfolio, adept at navigating complex interactions among domestic and international trade policies, and capable of addressing institutional policy challenges. The successful candidate will have a significant role in shaping the UK's approach to an increasingly complex international trade environment.
Key Responsibilities
As the selected candidate, you will:
- Oversee policy and strategic direction for all UK trade disputes at the WTO and in various FTAs, ensuring a coherent approach to international trade dispute resolution.
- Lead and inspire the Case Policy branch, which is tasked with managing trade disputes between the UK and its international partners.
- Engage with senior officials and Ministers, providing informed advice and briefings as necessary.
- Work collaboratively with other branches to ensure policy alignment and foster a cohesive approach to trade disputes.
- Coordinate with legal and analytical teams to assess dispute risks and develop effective strategies, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of legal implications.
- Build strong relationships across departments to align emerging policies with the UK's international commitments.
- Guide cross-governmental departments in managing risks and developing strategies for trade disputes, balancing political aspirations with risk management.
- Respond proactively to emerging risks and manage competing priorities effectively.
