Trade Policy Consultant for Mexico and the Caribbean

Position Overview
The Department for Business and Trade is seeking a highly skilled individual to become a vital member of the Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) team within the International Strategy and Trade Relations (ISTR) directorate. This team plays a crucial role in enhancing the UK's trade connections with global partners, focusing on market access and trade facilitation.
Role Responsibilities
The selected candidate will spearhead initiatives aimed at advancing the UK's trade policy goals throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, while also addressing challenges faced by UK enterprises aiming to invest or grow in these regions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with colleagues from the Department for Business and Trade and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to gain insights into the Mexico and Caribbean markets, UK business interests, and local governmental priorities. This includes leading discussions with various stakeholders to identify trade barriers and formulating strategies to overcome them.
- Managing trade policy components of the UK's bilateral relations in Mexico and the Caribbean, including working with partners on the UK-CARIFORUM Economic Partnership Agreement and enhancing the trade relationship with Mexico, particularly through the UK's participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
- Drafting briefings, submissions, and Parliamentary Questions (PQs) for senior officials and Ministers.
- Contributing to the integration of bilateral trade policy priorities within multilateral discussions and vice versa.
- Building and maintaining robust internal networks, including leading a successful xDBT LATAC forum. Engaging cross-governmentally with other departments and agencies, such as the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, UK Export Finance, and DEFRA, to achieve trade objectives for our markets. Opportunities will also arise to engage strategically with external stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications:
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively within and across teams, fostering and sustaining long-term professional relationships.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the capability to persuade and influence diverse audiences.
- Strategic mindset coupled with a problem-solving approach.
- Capacity to manage competing priorities efficiently.
Candidates must possess or be willing to obtain security clearance at SC level.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience in trade policy and familiarity with the UK's trade and investment framework.
- International work experience, particularly within the Latin America and Caribbean context.

Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary of £32,858, with the Department for Business and Trade contributing £8,871 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Additional benefits include:
