Position Overview

Are you eager to enhance your strategic acumen, elevate your professional profile, and engage directly with high-level stakeholders, including government officials, on critical departmental initiatives?

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is dedicated to fostering UK and global prosperity through the promotion and facilitation of international trade and investment, while advocating for free trade principles.

As part of the International Strategy and Trade Relations (ISTR) directorate, you will be integrated into the EU Member States team, where we spearhead the department's policy interactions with key EU Member States at the bilateral level. As the Country Lead for Poland, you will be tasked with formulating strategies regarding trade policy and influencing the overall trading dynamics with this significant market.

In your role as Poland Country Lead, you will oversee our bilateral trade strategy with Poland, our thirteenth largest trading partner. You will develop expertise in Poland's trade policy landscape and collaborate with various departments to identify opportunities and challenges within our trade relationship. Furthermore, you will craft and execute strategies aimed at overcoming specific trade obstacles.

By working collaboratively across the department, you will generate innovative ideas for UK-Poland cooperation on pressing trade issues, from enhancing economic security to upholding free trade principles. You will also take charge of project management for the comprehensive work program, providing updates to senior stakeholders on key priorities and progress.

Our team is a close-knit group of fewer than 20 members, characterized by a friendly and supportive atmosphere that fosters professional growth and success.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will require you to be a proactive and dynamic team player, confident in establishing a vision and engaging a broad network of stakeholders to realize that vision.

While experience in policy work, particularly in trade or European affairs, is advantageous, the most critical attributes are your analytical thinking, eagerness to learn, and innovative mindset.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Formulating the UK’s trade strategy with Poland: Collaborating with the British Embassy in Warsaw to design and implement strategies that enhance our £30 billion trading relationship.
  • Addressing trade barriers and influencing the Polish market: Leading government-wide initiatives to align regulatory frameworks, particularly in the renewables sector, to facilitate UK company participation.
  • Shaping EU policy through bilateral relationships: Partnering with the EU Services and Trade team to influence EU trade policy matters using DBT’s connections with the Polish government, especially during their EU Presidency.
  • Managing key UK-Poland bilateral events: Overseeing the UK’s primary annual trade engagement with Poland, building on the success of the UK-Poland Business, Trade and Investment Forum.
  • Preparing briefings for Ministerial engagements: Leading the preparation of briefings for Ministers and senior officials during interactions with Polish counterparts, while maintaining relations with the Polish Embassy in London.

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong strategic thinking abilities, with a capacity to critically engage with evidence to draw informed conclusions.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated capability to prioritize multiple projects effectively to ensure timely and high-quality delivery.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in international work, particularly in European contexts.
  • Background in international trade.
  • Experience collaborating closely with Ministers or managing senior stakeholder relationships.
